Do you need special equipment for indoor sowing?

My husband and I are newbies to growing anything from seed. I came here to see if I could find some pointers, but now I'm a little intimidated... It seems like everyone has special lights and/or greenhouses and special seed starting mixtures.

My husband is is the veggie gardener, so has a lot of different veggie seeds he'd like to get growing, and I have a bunch of different flower seeds (mostly annuals, a couple perennials) that say to sow indoors until after frost danger has passed.

We were just planning to put some seeds in little pots with Miracle Grow potting soil and keep them in our breakfast nook where we get a lot of natural light until around Mother's Day when we would transplant them outdoors. Are we just setting ourselves up for failure? Is there anything we can do without special equipment to get our seeds growing? Would we be better off sowing the outside? We are in Colorado in the Boulder area, so could have another frost or two in the next couple of months.

Please let me know if you have any advice. Thanks!!
