Cold Weather and Tornados

Our spring rains have finally arrived a month late. A small tornado touched down about 30 mins from here on Sat. tore up some large trees but nothing else. Tornado watch last night as well. Very strange weather this year. It's only 45F out right now--this time last year was 80F. I've been pumping water out of my pond as been filling to over the skimmer entrance daily. The good news is it's supposed to stop raining for the weekend and actually forecast is 77F still cold for this time of year. But we will have sun! My poor water lilies have buds but are just starting to open and the hyacinth is suffering from the cold. I'm hoping seeing as everything is about a month behind that we'll have summer in September???? I'm glad I'm not a farmer as my area has been declared disaster area due to no rain this spring until this last week. In order to get their insurance claims the farmers have had to respray for weeds and reseed. Barley and cannola from what I've heard as at least will have silage for the cattle in the winter.

Patty I am sorry to hear your summer has been so cold. Here in Ohio we have had temps in the high 60's to low 70's for the last two weeks. The usual temps are high 80's to low 90's. We have a saying here that "It will be a cold day in July" meaning the same as a cold day in Hades. But unfortunately the saying fit the weather.

I went to Kelly's Island on Lake Erie about a week ago and was surprised to see some May blooming flowers in bloom. Many of my September plants are putting out blooms. The clematis bush for one, and some of my evergreens are just starting to put out new growth now instead of May. Also none of my toad eggs hatched this year which I blame on the cold nights. Very strange weather year.

Well at least the sun is out today up here. Hopefully we got enough rain to do some good, sure perked up the garden. But still it is supposed to start again next week. Sounds like it may be an active year for tornados in your area. Sad thing is that the rain is still soaking right into the ground, no puddles yet which means the soil is not saturated yet. After the first heavy rain the soil was only wet about 4" deep. Gotta love living in Alberta. At least it settled the dirt and the pond should stay cleaner.

The reliable weather sources here in our region hedged from the moment the models started showing the Arctic cold front, and said repeatedly that the wintery precip was very unlikely to make it this far south. Even when the NWS forecast had us at a 20-30% chance of precip, and likely wintery precip at that, our temperatures still were going to be barely at or below freezing, so I felt like we would be okay down here. Incredibly, we still have patches of sleet here that haven't completely melted from the last storm, although they are shrinking in size every day and now remain only in really shady areas. I hope we have reasonably decent weather for the rest of the month so everyone can just enjoy the holidays and stay safe. Scott, I do think our local electric co-op was concerned about the prospects for another ice storm at the end of the week. Their employees or sub-contractors were out in our neighborhood yesterday,clearing areas beneath and beside power lines where anything was growing that could be a threat to the power lines if icing occurred. Ever since either Sat or Sun, our local forecast has trended warmer and warmer, so I haven't been too worried. I agree that the models do an amazing job of predicting the general trends. Just look at how often they can warn us 6-10 days out that a tornado outbreak is likely in a specific area on a specific day or days, and indeed, somewhere in the area they've highlighted, tornadoes generally do occur on those days. I think it is particularly helpful that they can issue PDS advisories days in advance when the models indicate a Particularly Dangerous Situation could develop. We are nice and warm down here, Scott. While the nights may be cooler than we'd like, our highs this week are in the 60s and may hit the 70s for a day or two. I'm guessing y'all must not be quite as warm there as we are here. Unfortunately, with warmer air temps in winter and lots of dormant and somewhat dry vegetation, our winter fire season may be starting early. We had a relatively small grass fire (maybe a half-acre) Sunday, another one yesterday that threatened a barn and vehicles before firefighters arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze quickly, and 4 more grass fires overnight. With some windy days this week, we're likely to have more little fires. I think we are too wet overall for them to get big and move quickly.....and hope I am right about that. After the two rain/ice/sleet/snow storms we've had in the last few weeks, the ground is so muddy that firefighting brush trucks are getting stuck in the mud at some of the fires we've been having. Normally the bad part of the winter wildfire season doesn't start until February or March. I'm hoping for a quiet winter, both in terms of weather and wildfire.

That's a shame. Our winters are off and on, and most nurseries have them already, and only one that I know of keeps them inside a greenhouse that's heated. It was about 45 last night and will be probably below 40 tonight. I have 5 planted, and am covering them at night with pots, and the rest are still in pots or seed trays, and I'm bringing them in at night. I'll see how those that are already planted do this spring. I'm tired of not getting more than a few tomatoes.

CAthy, I'm happy as long as the tank heater is keeping up, I HATE chopping ice from the tank. Actually, chopping it isn't the bad part, it's dipping the ice chunks out with a hay fork, I always get wet, and it's cold. Ugh. Hate that..... Wind chill factors of 20 to 30 below zero ought to tell me, I've made a wooden cover for the stock tank with a hole just big enough for the animals to put their heads through, I'm hoping it helps, at least enough to keep the tank unfrozen. We set a bale this afternoon, a big round bale will last 3-4 days, so hopefully it'll last until Wednesday morning, when it breaks a little and will be back up to a high of 17, and no below zero temps. I can do everything else manually, but the tractor doesn't always want to start when it's that cold and I need the tractor to move those big bales. As for school, they will probably not have school Monday or Tuesday, we have so many rural students that ride busses and it's just not safe to have small children out in that weather. When it hits zero they are not allowed to go outside for recess and when it's colder, they eventually give up and close school. Annie

We, too, have been having heavy rain and abnormally low temps, especially at night.. in the 40's.

I have today off, and, since it is the only "non-rain" day of the week & weekend, decided to work on that blasted stream!!! Of course, it is in the 80's now, whew. I came in to cool off a bit.

Now back to hefting rocks and moving dirt.

We also had a very rainy spring with temps below normal. The veggie garden was first saturated, then stunted by cool weather, and then straight into 100 degree weather. Needless to say, no tomatoes yet.

Unfortunately, we are heading into another week of temperatures above the 100's mark. The temps will range from 103-110 for the next 7 days. And, if you factor in the humidity, it is going to be very unbearable. Temps at night will be in the upper 70's-lower 80's. Too bad I can't see in the dark, as that would be a good time to work in the yard. LOL.

hardin, We've got the same weather pattern in KS and I'm not sure the temps are cool enough even at night to work outside! LOL We are going on a pond tour tomorrow afternoon in Wichita and I am thinking it's going to be very uncomfortable, but I can't stand the thought of missing out on seeing all the beautiful water gardens either.

Oh, that will be fun, hot, but fun. If you see any neat ideas, you will have to tell us about them, when you get back.
As for working outside during the day, I can handle the temps, but if the humidity is too high, it's harder. Just have to take frequent breaks and drink lots of water and Gatorade. Sometimes, I will go jump in our swimming pool, clothes and all. LOL.
