How do you grow orchids from seed?

I have seen that question posted in various form over the years. The answer is very simple. Let someone who knows what they are doing attempt it. It is very difficult and way beyond the average hobbyist's expertise so don't even try. Don't even think about it.

I recently bloomed a Bulbophyllum phaelanopsis and 2 month later am presented with a seed pod. I may know how to grow orchids (sort of he-he) but I would never attempt to harvest these seeds and expect to actually get plants. I'm going to donate the seed pod to the Troy Meyer Orchid Conservatory. No guarantee of success but chances are he'll do as good a job as is possible. They will attempt to make 3 to 4 flasks and send me one of them, my reward for the donation.

They are welcome to the other flasks which they will try to sell. I don't know if they are non-profit but I do know that they are involved with orchid conservation which is good enough for me.

And that's how you grow orchids from seed. Leave the rest to the experts.

Nick
