I got my Phal cochlearis from Oak Hill back in early 2006. They still carry youngish plants for $12.50.

Isn't that website great. The man who does the website is one of the people who ID'd my incorrectly labeled Phal. luddemaniana as pulchra. What he knows about the differentials in the species is amazing. He can tell you the difference between two species by the minor differences, to me, in the lips of these plants.

Phal. tetrapis is one of my most wanted species but still haven't found one I can afford. I did get two flasks of tetrapis x gigantea that hasn't been named yet but if all the seedlings take after gigantea, I might not live long enough to see them bloom :>)

Good luck with your choices and attempt with germinating seeds. Put me on the list for one of the flasks if you are successful.

Brooke - it is an amazing website! Thanks for the encouragement! Tetrapis is also definitely on my wish list too - I love the pure white flowers with the random splashes of red. I am going to be on the look out for some species at my local orchid meetings as well - I think I have a pretty good chance of getting equestris, so at least I can try my first cross. I know how overly ambitious this probably sounds, but I'm determined to make this work, and will keep you in mind if things work out.

Another wonderful species Phal place to browse although they don't ship during the winter is Dowery Orchids (on Orchidmall) in Virginia. I have gotten wonderful Phals and other species from them. Dwayne and Gifford are the best! Depends where you ship to as to whether this will work for you.

Well, I don't know whether to thank cj or give her a boo/hiss. I also need to learn to spell tetraspis and maybe even pronounce it. Several on there will cost my husband some money.

Can't help you with the species, but below is a link to Bedford Orchids. Bedford Orchids is half in Canada, half in US, and Howard Ginsburg, the proprietor is very much *into* breeding, and also, into re-making of old crosses using superior cultivars as parents. He might be interested in joining with you for some crosses. Worth asking, anyway.

There's also instructions on the Bedford site about de-flasking.

Another person who does a lot of hybrids on his own is Al or Al's Orchids. He is offering some primary hybrids right now in tiny sizes. Again, wouldn't hurt to ask him whether he would be interested in some kind of affiliation.

Just checked out the phal gallery at Dowery Orchids -- really great. He has examples of selected cultivars at the bottom of the picture page. Gives you a good idea of the variation, and what a "superior" example would look like.

The boo/hiss was BECAUSE I checked the photo gallery. He has some I've heard about but never even seen a picture of and of course, they jumped to the top of the list.

My pen and pencil always sits by the computer to add to my list. I seldom take one off the list. It has happened, but not often.

I got a Phal celebensis and a gibbosa from Dowery last year. The gibbosa is a wee mini with cute flowers. The celebensis has probably the most gorgeous leaves of the Phal species.

Another wonderful Phal breeder is Tom Harper of Stone Mountain Orchids in Tennessee. I don't believe he has a website. He is also a wonderful speaker for groups.

cj do you have a pic of the celebensis leaves? I have a seedling of celebensis x micholitzii (sp) cross and the foliage on it is gorgeous. It is silver green with small dots, for lack of a better description, on the leaves and the edges are the same color as the little dots. It is in spike and I can't wait to see it bloom.

Shame on all of you for enabling. :) I would also like to see some pictures of interesting phal leaves - after seeing Brooke's variegated varieties, I'm going to need to make a hefty order this spring...I've already devising ways by which I can import the plants across the border, since the 2006 Canadian Food Inspection agency directive D-01-03 allows one to transport up to 50 plants across the border without need for phytosanitary certification. Perhaps a drive down to Buffalo is in order.

Call Paramount. They've got cochlearis, equestris and a gorgeous alba version of tetraspsis. You won't be able to get them right away, but you also won't have to hide your new babies in a wheel well.

You might also want to call the Laboratoire Orchidexpert. Their website has been down for a while, but give them a call. They've got many Phal species (including equestris, which I've bought from them), though mostly in seedling size. They might be able to help you.

Flora Peculia also has a few odder Phal species and might have something for you, but be sure to isolate anything you get from him.

Thanks for the references, Julie! I didn't know paramount had it - this is exciting...and then I started looking at everything else they have....*_*
Of course, if we're doing our oak hill thing this spring maybe I'll just get it from them! Maybe we should see if more Canadians in our parts are interested in jumping in on that - that way we could potentially avoid having 5 of each plant...could be a bit of a hassle, but saves on S/H for sure!
