roses for morning shade, afternoon sun
Comments (6)Hi Bart, I grow Lavender Lassie in a spot that gets some sun in early spring, but once the trees leaf out it is in pretty Stygian shade all the rest of the season (May-October). It grows as a big sprawly shrub and blooms beautifully (big flush) in spring. No bloom after, however. I'm trying a baby LL in a sunnier spot, to see if I get re-bloom, though others on this forum have told me LL is basically a once-bloomer even in sun. My only hesitation about LL in your conditions is that the flowers might kind of bleach out in the afternoon sun. One of my MIPs is in a rather shady spot, and does ok - not as well as the ones in sun (smaller plant, fewer flowers, a bit more BS) but ok. I have a recommendation for your spot - how about Carefree Beauty/Katy Road Pink? I have multiple specimens of this rose in various conditions: full sun, shade, partial shade with major root competition from trees, a too-small container, etc etc etc. Nothing seems to bother this rose - they all bloom well (the one in shade is a bit leggier and blooms a bit less than the others, but still) and are healthy and trouble free. If you are ok with once-bloomers, Constance Spry and Himmelsauge are ones that I grow in shade that do quite well, and I bet they wouldn't mind afternoon sun. Anyway, good luck with this problem spot!...See MoreEverything's Coming In Pink
Comments (12)Oh M, you're funny! I SO love rich reds as well. The pinks make me feel happy, the reds touch something quite deep, emotional. Something I just realized in Ken's post, is that I also have minimal yellows - well, plenty blends w/yellows, but I tend to pass up the pure yellow. I have Julia Child, Sunsprite, Teasing Georgia, and unknown which was already here and cl. Royal Gold, but that's it. I've passed by Walking on Sunshine, Gold Medal, St. Patrick, Sunflare, Oregold, and so many others many times over. Wondering if it's just that they don't tend to be as fragrant as the pinks and reds, and I'm a fragrance junkie. Glad the most common color happens to be one I really like. Like chestnut and bay in horses - the most dominant, common colors (for most breeds). And aside from a few DA whites, HT and white just doesn't work for me. After reading so many rave posts about Pope John Paul II, including fragrance, I found myself staring at it at Navlets. I just couldn't pick it up. I have Iceberg as it was so inexpensive, but that's it. Do love purples/lavendars and orange / apricots....See MoreHow Do You Purchase / Find your Roses?
Comments (7)My first roses were three Raspberry Cream twirl bareroot/own root roses I got mail order from Northland Rosarium a few years ago, they were so green and healthy and took off like crazy. I also bought Folksinger and Quietness as gallons from heirloom roses, they were tiny green babies when they arrived, but so healthy too. I then planted a Pretty in Pink Eden I got at Lowe's, and a $3 clearanced red knockout, and a $15 potted Chicago peace I found at Home Depot. Oh I can't forget my Francis Meilland rose, that scent mmmmm. Everything has taken off! Gardening is so fun. Last spring I planted David Austin roses Abraham Darby and James Galway that I ordered bareroot, and a 5 pack of "rainbow of roses" bareroot roses that were on sale for like $13 total shipped- those have all taken off too. And I found Eden at Lowe's last June and planted that too, it took off in its first year and looks amazing this spring. Wether they are own root or grafted they thrive in my zone 5 garden and I do zero winter protection. This year while I still love my roses and they're gearing up for their best season yet, I'm now obsessed with daylilies and irises. I have the gardening bug and can't help myself I have three new roses I just planted- summer romance and Dark Desire, and Canyon Road, all about $8-$15 each I got from Lowe's and a grocery store. Oh I forgot I also grow miniature roses. My first one was from the grocery story I got for mother's Day in 2016 I think. I've since added a white one and purple/magenta ones. Wish I knew the variety names they are gorgeous too. So let me count... that's 21 roses in total I think. And I always want more ☺️...See MoreWhat are your rose shopping habits?
Comments (53)Amanda, that's not a bad idea. The gentleman who did my deck started out building his own and as he ran out of projects he did his neighbors; later formed a company and managed six teams LOL Vaporvac, good eyes! Yes those are Summer Romance freshly picked last May. I planted 4 of them in the ground early April and got tons of flowers throughout the season. The fragrance is divine! They stayed "evergreen" for me this winter (we have a mild winter so far) but I did pull off all the leaves and forced them to go dormant - hope I did not mess them up by doing that (I am such a rose newbie)! I will be sure to post up photos of my rose beds in bloom this year (I have received so much helpful advice on here that I am very happy to share what I have learned). I did have a photo of one rose bed taken back in June - a total of 28 roses there, approx. half Meilland and half DA roses - bushes were still small with a few flowers, mostly green! Lilyfinch, congratulations on your new start! I look at it as a "reset button" for new opportunities (of buy buy buy) LOL That way you may order all your favorite roses and the ones proven to be best performers all over again. And I am sure you will know exactly "who goes where" and "who compliments whom" this second round!...See Morejerijen
