Which one should I buy : Cemelot, Cherish or Queen Elizabeth

Hi All,

I could do with some help from your experience and years of wisdom on roses. I am a new addict to the rose world but keep long hours at work... therefore I am looking for roses that are easy to maintain (no black spots or mildewy one for me). I am willing to sacrifice fragrance to repeat blooms.

Some of the roses that I have identified but I am not too sure which ones will work for me in North Carolina are :

Camelot

If any of these is a no-no , do let me know....

Camelot - is an excellent rose for us (10 years)

Gene Boerner - is one of our bloom factories (8 years)

Sonia - is new in our yard. She was nice last year. I need to upload some pics of her from last year. (2 years)

Blackspot is not a problem here in Montana. Take those photos with a grain of salt.

I love my Rosa, America. Love the salmon color and fragrance. Pretty foliage too. It is growing up on my wattle fence at the back of my cottage rose garden. In my zone, it does not die back. I mulch most of my roses heavily for winter with soil and wood chips, then pull it back in spring. Our soil has winter heave - freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw all winter long and in early spring. I mulch deeply to prevent my roses' roots from being exposed due to the heaving. My Rosa. America has not required any spraying. No muss, no fuss. I don't grow roses that can't take my climate and require a lot of work. Experiment and see what YOU think. It may be just the thing for you. (BTW, I bought mine from WalMart for $4...cash and carry) I order from Countryside Roses and the Antique Rose Emporium too, but I never pass up a good rose just because it happens to be from WalMart or any other store's garden center. I bought a yellow Lady Banks rose from Lowe's one year. It was on the "discount rack" dying a very sad and ugly way. It had downy mildew and some other god-awful problem, but I still wanted to try to bring it back to life. According to the tag and professional rose growers, Lady Banks is not supposed to be grown in zone 6b. But, I took it home, washed it with Tide and water and cleaned all the yuck off and it recovered quickly. It grew 6 feet the first year and then shot up to the porch pillars by the following year. It now covers half of my front porch - I have had it for over 10 years. It does not require any spraying, mulching, it does not die back and it doesn't even need watering. Occasionally, I need to prune it back because it's canes invade the porch sitting area. It has survived several years of above normal summer temps and drought, and our severe winter weather deep freezes and ice storms. So if you like Rosa, America, buy it, plant it and see how it does for you in your garden and your climate. sweetannie4u

Inga: Many thanks for your ID of my plant. I didn't know that the yellow-center uglier one is endangered. I was killing it, since I like the orange ones with black center better. I would have to get the yellow ones' seeds from my Mom again. Some info. on calendula: "Calendula is not one of the major medicinal herbs, but it does have its place in the medicine cabinet. The petals or leaves can be used in a Tea to induce sweating, promote menstruation, increase urination, relieve stomach cramps, indigestion and stomachaches, and for relief from flu and fevers. Externally, Calendula flowers and leaves can be made into an Ointment or powder for a variety of common skin ailments, including cuts, scrapes, abrasions, scalds, blisters, acne, rashes (including diaper rash), chicken pox outbreaks, and athlete's foot. For bee stings, rub the fresh flowers directly on the sting to relieve the pain."

Here is my method that I posted in my city's Rose Society. So the times are suited for here. :) I have a 100% success rate with 54 potted roses. :) Carol's Method of Overwintering Potted Roses in Garage • Keep deadheading until it's time for the roses to go into the garage. I give my last dose of fertilizing around the 2nd week of September. • In October, start watering a little bit less so the roses can experience some dryness. • When the night time temperature gets to about -6C it is time to move the pots into the garage. If it’s just one or two nights of low temperatures, I usually leave them outside…but you can get a bit of blackening of the canes. • Do not cut the plant down. Leave it as it is, but remove the leaves right to the cane. Give the rose one last really good water before using a dolly to move the pots into the garage. • Cover the roses with old thick blankets, layers of old flannel sheets or old sleeping bags when the outside temperatures get to about -20C. • The roses should experience darkness. If you have windows, then cover them with. It doesn't matter if the garage door is opened and closed. • Around March, check to see if the pots have dried out. If they have, give each rose about 1/2 cup water if they’re in a big pot (55 L are what mine are and about 22” across the top). If they’re in a smaller pot, then you should probably check them earlier – maybe early January and only give them ¼ cup or less of water. Once you start watering, you should continue once every month. • As the weather starts to warm up in the spring, the blankets can be removed. • Once the temperature gets to about 5C outside on a regular basis you can move the rose outside during the day, and recover with blankets to give protection overnight, or move back into the garage for the night. Moving the roses back into the garage is preferable to covering them…but if you have too many roses to make that feasible, then covering will do. • Water well once the pots get moved outside. The water will help protect the roots from cold. • Caveat, my garage is dry walled and probably insulated. Hope that helped, Carol

"I see so many bedrooms on Pinterest and Houzz that are inviting , child friendly and lovely. But how that is all brought together in a cohesive look is still a mystery to me. Maybe I’m focusing on the wrong things?" I would caution you to be very careful about internalizing these images you see online. They are highly staged, have a team of professionals tweaking and moving things here and there, tight shots so you don't see imperfections, photoshopping galore. They aren't real life! Where are the science projects? Where are the plastic action figures, barbies, ponies? The sweater that someone took off and tossed on the chair, where's that? I'm 100% certain that no child had any say in a single bit of what is in these inspirational rooms. Are your grandkids old enough to consult on this? Could you ask them what they would find useful and enjoyable? If they aren't old enough to give useful input, they are probably young enough to appreciate a casual space that they don't have to be terribly careful with. I know my own kids love having a chair on their room, they love having the freedom to rearrange and decorate with their treasures, they love seeing photos of themselves with family and friends. Those are the things that make a room feel like Home rather than a picture-perfect photo shoot. Since you mentioned it, maybe you are focussed on the wrong things. Are you more concerned with impressing your children and your friends than you are with making your grandkids feel cherished? Are you putting so much pressure on yourself to create the perfect social media-approved space that you don't have any mental space to visualize the joy your family will feel in seeing you and how happy you will be to have your grandkids sleeping under your roof? Everyone on this thread agrees that the room is beautiful (a rare occurance!) and that all you need is a simple rug, a chest of some sort with a lamp or two, and a bench/chair or two. It's also rare that people agree 100% on what a room needs! So you are very very close to finished here, and once your grandkids come and add their life and luggage to the room it will come alive!

Queen Elizabeth grows to a huge plant. In my experience it should be sprayed in NC. Our QE showed RMV in year 6 so it is gone.

Sonia is very productive with no fragrance; she is a good quality florist rose. I will order it next year from Pickering (this year P. isn't going to send me one, I just got the notification).

from you list I have Queen Elizabeth and Cherish. Of the two I prefer QE. Cherish has not been at all vigorous and is very black spot prone here. It's probably destined to be shovel pruned. I have tried three times to get Camelot. The first two were body bags and were mislabels which is not unusual but the third time I ordered it from a reputable nursery and it was still a mislabel. I think I'm fated to never have it. From what I understand it's a lovely rose though.

Digger - Those pictures are a great help. Not to mention that your roses are gorgeous !

Ceterum - You almost read my drift. I had not listed Q. Elizabeth here but was tempted.

Seil- Now I figure why I had crossed out Cherish...

I am tempted to go with Camelot and GB. Can I pair Camelot with America (climber) because the color of blooms look similar ?...

My co-workers think I am totally nuts (addicted to roses) while I find it strange that none of them has dabbled in roses ! I just cannot figure how this great addiction has not yet struck any one of them.... very strange!

gulabmari, my pleasure :) I had a spot saved near Camelot for Rosarium Uetersen because I thought that climber would look great with it. Now I have a seedling there that is doing so well I don't want to move it *sigh*
Camelot has a moderate fragrance. Gene Boerner has very little.

Tell your coworkers about the guy in Montana that was out shoveling snow off the front lawn onto the roses yesterday when it was -10Â°F, snowing with a 30 mph breeze. That is nutz.

If you can find a good quality Medallion, grab it! (And email me the source, LOL!)

One of the most beautiful roses I ever planted. It was a profuse bloomer and the blooms were huge and beautifully shaped. Mine has been declining for years but I keep the ghost of the former Medallion still in my yard till I find a good replacement. It also said to be very fragrant - I cannot vouch for that but the color, the blooms and the plant itself in its first 3 years was/were - breathtaking.

Ceterum, let seeÂ where are you located. I will make sure I pick up Medallion if I see any... HD has them knocked down 75%. I went looking for perennials (seeds) but came back with 3 rose bushes ( JosephÂs Coat , Camelot & GB). Average cost was $4 .. they are in the garge just now and I am trying to get them back to looking healthy.

Maybe I can mail you some after my efforts on propagating them. Cannot help sharing this, but one of my bathrooms has been converted to a greenhouse. LetÂs see if it is just a whim or I will meet with some success. The rose clippings have shown new shoots but no signs of roots yet (they are just 2 weekÂs old).

Thought of getting my correct name here, rather than using a sidey name :-)....err...
actually 'gulabmali' means 'rose gardener'...

I grow Cherish and it's one of my best performers. It's a bloom machine, but doesn't have much fragrance. It's disease free, but I live in dry southern California. She looks great planted with lavender and artemisia.

I started out with 8 roses 9 years ago, and now have 100, and I still have Cherish. So for me, she is a keeper.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, plant Quietness. It has been amazingly productive and blackspot resistant here in SE VA on the NC border. Armloads of blooms. Available from Roses Unlimited. Oh, and by the way Roses Unlimited also have the marvelous-wonderful-terrific MEDALLION! You can ask Pat how Camelot would look planted with America, that could be really neat.

I love Camelot! The colors in my VA garden are "shrimp pink" to a coral blend. It just glows! Medallion is also a keeper. It makes HUGE blooms for me when the weather cools in the fall and has nice sturdy upright stems for cutting. Looks awesome with Red Sea Ageratum.

On second thought I would recommend a different venue.
If you want black spot resistant roses try either some of the Bucks noted for bs resistance or check out Palatine roses' website for the new disease resistant Kordes roses.

If you are new to roses, I would recommend Palatine because they deliver huge bare roots that will do well in their first year. Then check out Chamblee's for Buck's - those will be one gallon potted plants and will need time to mature but how soon they mature also depends on the variety. I rooted a Folksinger cutting last winter and by the end of the growing season it was 4' tall. On the other hand, I got Quietness as a rooted seedling beforehand and it is still about 2'. I know that the mature height of Quietness is about 5'. Earth Song is said to be blackspot free, great bloomer and fragrant but I have no idea how fast it will mature - I just got it from Chamblee's.

But again, to those who just start with roses I recommend to get great quality grafted plants to have satisfaction of growing roses relatively fast.

You could also check out Pickering nurseries, they also list a large number of disease resistant roses.

I would suggest a rose you didn't mention and that is Compassion - healthy, fragrant, good repeat and gorgeous. It is a climber but I grow it as a large shrub.

Another rose from Pickering that performs very well in NC, first to bloom and last to finish, extremely abundant bloomer is Scent-Sation. It was 5' tall and 4Â wide by the end of the first season.

I only hope these come up as well as my first rose climber!!
