Growing from Seed

Does anyone know the answer to this?

I bought Superthrive and Messengers today. I have read the little bit of info on the bottles, which isn't much, and also on the web and in forums. I am still confused. Which product do I use for which situation? 1. Starting seeds inside under lights (which one goes in the water). 2. Rooting cuttings. 3. Spraying seedlings.

I don't want to use the wrong product and harm my lil plants and seeds.

Hi kvalentz - can I ask why you feel you need these products? Neither is normally associated with starting seedlings.

Superthrive is marketed as a vitamin-based fertilizer - sold with an awfully lot of hype I might add - mixed in water, and used on established plants - primarily trees per their website. It has no research supported role in starting seeds or use on seedlings that I know of.

Messenger is marketed as a "plant health activator" - again, no role in germinating seeds but I have read info from others who find it helpful in treating fungal diseases on established plants.

A search here at GW by product name may pull up past discussions on these products perhaps they can be of help to you.

Wow 8 weeks is longer than I thought. I just planted some honey suckle and some passion vine. I have a 2 year old and this is the first year since I was pregnant that I have felt up to really working in the garden. Prior to baby #3 my children and I looked up each butterfly we saw. We get a lot of cabbage whites and yellows, skippers, occasional spicebush and also tiger swallowtail. Last year we had so many monarchs that I think they killed off one of my milkweeds. This summer I found a great deal at a catalogue sale and bought ten small starters to add to the garden. I've been wondering if I should put some netting over them to keep the larva off till next year so I will have a large area of milkweed. By the way, Is it OK to treat my Black eyed Susan with a fungicide? It's not a caterpillar food but still it makes me a little nervous to put any chemicals in the garden. If I don't the fungus could spread though. Ann

I've tried everything on aphids and by far the best method I've found is just spraying them off with a hose. If you do it consistently for a week or so it makes a huge difference! Good luck!

Is a fully Integrated KA KUDE70 possible?

gwentm, I'm about to install our KitchenAid KUDE70FVPA (panel-ready) dishwasher, and our cabinet maker is creating the custom door panel as I type... When making my appliance purchase decision I was out here quite a bit, reading about this issue, and I was real specific with my GC and cabinet maker about this question. Our lower cabinets are the standard 24" depth, but given that the wall behind them isn't perfectly flat along the long length of this wall, the dw opening happens to be about 24 3/16" deep from the rear wall to the front of the cabinet structure. Although the KUDE70 specs state that the total depth of the DW is 24 7/8", I measured our panel-ready model (ordered well-in-advance) and determined that when pushed flat against a wall, the front of the DW door that the custom panel attaches to is actually 24 1/4 inches out from the wall. Our cabinet style choice was to have overlaid drawer and cabinet fronts (with added raised molding, fwiw). The 3/4"-thick door/drawer fronts, with the little vinyl pads, protrude about 25" from the wall. So, I expect our 3/4" custom panel, added to the 24 1/4" panel-ready DW, to fit perfectly :-). Note that had we opted for *flush* cabinets and drawers, we would have needed to find another inch of depth to match up with the custom DW panel... Also, our granite counters have a 5/8" overhang past the door/drawer fronts, so the DW will be "totally integrated" under the counter. Pictures below... Good luck to you, -- brian

I have never heard that. I was sure it was granite. If that makes you concerned, don't worry. It is a very popular and beautiful stone that you won't have any trouble with. Congrats on making a decision! BTW, most granite yards have other types of stone besides granite--marble, quartzite, soapstone, quartz, etc.

I haven't used Messenger but have heard good things about it. I do use Superthrive but not for starting seeds. I use ST for transplants, cuttings and stressed plants and have found it to be a very good product. I also use B-1 for transplants and cuttings.

Dave, there is now a Messenger product directed at starting seeds. Said to 'increase uniformity in germination', but I haven't seen it, haven't used it myself.
