Oncidium in bark--self watering for me?

I got an oncidium which was set up in bark and after my cat tipped it over a couple of times it is back in bark. I have it set up on a southern window so it *should* be getting good light. The leaves are looking pretty much the same as when i first got it. But no flower spikes despite all the tlc. I was thinking of maybe setting it up in a self watering pot--i've only been watering once a week or week and a half. Not sure if bark will give sufficient wick action or maybe too much wick and it'll rot roots? does anybody know about this?
