I planted Hostas in my veggy filter, but the water was too deep and the leaves rot if they are in water. I planted some in the skippy filter where water is not as deep and they do very well there. Glenda

I have clumps of hosta sitting on the selves in my pond.
I kinda wedge them with a rock and I even have a huge clump floating around in some driftwood. I dug some, soaked in water in a bucket and then really rinsed the roots, they look so good and are really growing.

I have one in my stream, overwintered right in the stream and came back this year. Will post a pic soon.

I'm in Utah and your over-wintering the hosta in Montana's winter intrigues me. I love hostas and have a hosta garden next to one side of the pond (shady area, under the scrub oaks). I'd love to try bare-rooting a hosta in the pond or stream. Some questions:

How cold did it get in your area this past winter?
Is your pond hosta in sun, shade or half & half?
Any other tips you can share?

What a great idea, if it works! I've bare-rooted impatiens again this year (I learned this on this forum last year). And although they're only annuals, they grow wonderfully well throughout the summer and fall until they freeze, and they bring a splash of color wherever I've wedged them. Would love to add hostas to the mix.

Do you think the hostas would do better bareroot, or potted?? Or do you think they would do equally well either way? I wasn't sure if wet soil would cause more problems than just bareroot. Thanks!

Our winters are long and cold, well below zero several days this winter, and below freezing most of the time. We did keep the stream running this year, maybe that has something to do with the hosta coming back. I forgot about it untill I saw it a few weeks ago. The pond and stream are in full sun (when it is sunny :).
Lately we have had some really cool days and nights, even had to light the wood stove a few days ago. I say go for it and try several hostas in different places in your pond to see what works for you, good luck.

Hostas are sooooo resilient. You can divide them any time and they do fine. They really take alot of abuse.
Another hosta question for you all: Which hostas seem to tolerate the most sun? I have a Krossa Regal that gets a little pekid in all-day sun. My others aren't really in that much sun to know. I have alot of honey bells and royal standards. Anyone know which one of those can tolerate alot of sun? Thanks!
