Happee...... wunnerful wunnerful news! For the benifit of others who maybe going through the process and frustration of having green pond water, what did you do or not do, to accomplish this great transformation from muck to mirth?

ok...first i put hornsworth in the pond...a green palny that i let float around . some of it stayed on the bottom and anchored.

then i bought a cheap bio filter...with bio balls..hooked it up to the pump.

i added barley nuggets... itried the marley mat but that didn't work so good..

i really think the barley nuggets did the trick......

i added 2 water lilies to the bottom of the pond and a green grass in a pot of rocks i submerged...oh i also added impatients in a clay pot filled with rocks..no dirt...sbmerged to rim of pot...

and the biggest thing i think was to leave it alone...as has been suggested many times here.

i also added 4 feeder gold fish last week.

Just went through the same problem with greenish / brown water. In another thread someone suggested "Pond Balance". I ordered some and 2 weeks ago added the first dose. I also added a ton of beneficial bacteria from Microlift and some desolving blocks I picked up at PetSmart. I cleaned my Savio filter pad every day and the water is so clear I have to stop myself from drinking it on a hot day.

it really is amazing how one day your water is murkey and the next day or so it turns clear. i have a 70 gallon skippy and i took a bucket and put my pump in it, then filled with quilt batting to make a pre-filter. all i have added was a little barley straw and some microblift pl. water is nice and clear. lots of plants as well. only 6 6-7" goldfish in it. i'm happy with the look of it. now i only need to finish all the rock work.

Hey Horton....glad to 'see' a familiar face : ). I have not read or posted in a year or two, but several years ago I researched this for a friend and found the solution in my own pond. Using a jar of my clear pond water she added it to her murky pea soup (250 gals)and in about 2 weeks hers became crystal clear as well. My clear water was called 'seed' water and because it was clear, it triggered a die-off of her algae. A larger amount of 'seed' water, quicker algae die-off, some sort of pyramid effect. A year later I invited a coworker to try this method and it worked for her as well.

Funny you should bring that "seeding" method up. I just gave a friend a gallon of the water/sludge out of my filter to seed his new pond that has an algae bloom. The pond is now begining to clear up and is looking good.
I first read about that method of bacteria seeding in an article by Norm Meck, some years ago.
It is very effective way of clearing green water and if you do it as soon as the bloom starts, the quicker it clears.

gee do you think this seed method would work with my sisterinlaws pond?

she just spent $45.00 on some stuff a pond store told her would do the trick but alas not working...

my water is clear.... but it hasn't been for very long...do you think if i gave her some of mine it might help?

Joanne, Here is the link that explains the theory of clear water 'seeding'. If you don't want to read the entire article go halfway down the page past the myth & fact section and read from there. The site is sponsored by the Koi Club of San Diego. I personally would prefer to use this natural method before adding store bought cure-alls to my pond.

Horton you are probably the one who turned me on to the article and I bookmarked it all those years ago : ) (it is indeed by Norm Meck).

I don't understand why there isn't more mention of that technique, in other literature/articles on green water?
But there again, there is more money to be made from "store bought cure-alls"!

I agree, people seem leery of trying it. I mean, c'mon people...it's free and if it doesn't work for you....try the store bought chemicals.
