All I can say is I feel your pain! Everyone says be patient. Let us know if you find a magic cure. I have no results with biolift pl and green clean that are suppose to work like a charm. I have 2500 gallons of water, a upper pond, 20ft stream and lower pond. Maybe it just takes a long time to get a balance. Also I am in the sun in the afternoon.

Quantities of plants serve to starve the algae by consuming the nutrients algae needs to survive. Based on conditions, it could take weeks. Shade is another deterrent of algae and that's where floating plants help. Lilies, hyacinth and duckweed are all good for creating shade.

Suspended algae (pea soup) is very tiny and arguably almost impossible to filter mechanically. The tiny cells just pass through the filter material.

The only fast method to deal with suspended algae is a properly sized UV filter. Algae will quickly die out when exposed to enough UV light.

I've used UV for years, but I don't run it unless the pond water starts to turn green. My UV lamp can reverse an algae bloom in about 4 or 5 days and that's good enough for me.

it's a desperate move, but I've been able to fight off algae with hydrogen peroxide before. You need about one large bottle of peroxide for every 200 gallons, and works best if you pour it right onto the area affected most.

Microbe Lift makes a black dye that you might try to shade the pond. Doesn't take very much. I used it in my greenhouse pond last year and it cleared up pea soup overnight. The black is less fake looking that the blue. Don't use too much. Don't get it all over your hands or clothes. This should work for the party. Won't hurt plants or fish whereas other chemicals might.

Shading of 50 to 75% of a ponds surface is considered effective in controlling algae. Algae needs sunlight to exist and a significant reduction of sunlight will have an effect on algae. I have read countless books, magazine articles, and Web posts proclaiming shade as a deterrent to algae. I've link one source below and have many others.

Perhaps you can offer some support to your theory. I'm very interested in reading some solid proof that anything less then 100% shade will have minimal effect on algae. Your statement contradicts everything I have read about algae, as well as my own experience.

Put a plantless pond in 50% shade and see what happens. Algae.

Put a plant-filled pond with a bog or bio-filter and good flow in 100% sun and see what happens. Crystal clear water.

Shade, shade, shade, shade is pummeled into people's heads, when in reality, it's the established plant life competing for the nutrients that algae use, combined with filtration and flow.

How about if we put a pond in total sun with non shading plants and another one in total sun with shading plants? I'll wager the shaded pond is less likely to produce algae. Shade is part of the formula. Algae needs sun to survive.
