Need a healthy repeat-bloom climber that likes morning shade
Comments (18)Jen, keep in mind that even if the rose is getting the required number of sunshine hours, you will have more disease issues with a rose that is shaded all morning. I had another nice conversation with Mike Shoup from the Antique Rose Emporium yesterday about finding a suitable rose for a spot such as yours. He told me their weren't any roses that would do very well with morning shade. He felt they all need sunlight in the morning and actually tolerate the reverse better (a morning sun afternoon shade situation). Most cases the rose does best in sunshine for most of the day, if not all day. Paul Zimmerman from Ashdown has told me the same thing. My personal experience has born this out, but I was hoping Mike would tell me otherwise. In other words, I wanted to hear what I wanted to hear. I was truly hoping some kind of rose would thrive in that situation. This does not mean a rose won't grow in that situation. Many do. It just will never look as nice or be as healthy as one that gets sunshine on it first thing. Sandy...See MoreAltissimo Blackspot/ Really Healthy Red Climbers?
Comments (7)Amadeus. Blooms are both large in size and formed in large clusters. They last for weeks on the plant even in high heat and do not burn. It is also a pure red and striking in the landscape. It also repeats very well and heavily. The disease resistance is remarkable and it is both vigorous and with better than average winter hardiness (granted not a concern for you). If I had to pick only one red climber in my garden, this is the one I have and I already grow Quadra and another good one, Dublin Bay. Honourable mention to Red Corsair, but it wants to be more of a huge shrub than a traditional climber/pillar rose. Here is a link that might be useful: Amadeus...See MoreNeed Advice on Loud Repeating Healthy Climber
Comments (18)Well, folks...before I saw all these suggestions, I moved William Allen Richardson to the trellis... I hope he does well there. I will checkout the other suggestions and probably find places for all of them. Royal Sunset is gorgeous. I couldn't find Paname on HMF...I tried two Crepuscules last fall, but they didn't recover from the Easter freeze...I will have this rose one day! Joseph's Coat is a BS magnet for me...but gorgeous. I've got two Cecile Brunners...one climbing a tree and another covering a shed...or at least each is starting to do its job. I've got Alexandre Girault, and it is wonderful. Mine is being trained up a tree. I may need to move my Westerland to a place where it will get watered regularly. I wonder whether the plum trellis can accomodate both William Allen Richardson AND Westerland.... that may be an idea. Westerland is struggling without supplemental water. Autumn Sunset is a beauty too and seems to be doing okay in my rose tunnel, so I don't wanna move that rose. Thanks, Everyone! Robert...See MoreLooking for a good, healthy climber that will bloom
Comments (36)I agree with Embothrium...climbers often will not bloom as much until they're a size they want to be. You have some huge plants with few blooms...I bet they will eventually bloom if you give it more time. What do you feed them? Maybe they're getting too much nitrogen. The small plants of course are not going to put on a big show. I'd figure out why they're still small. IMO planting a very small plant in the ground is not as reliable as planting it in a pot and growing it on awhile until it has a bigger root system. If it just sits there in the ground I'd pot it back up and see if it doesn't get bigger....See Morebethnorcal9
