Dzitmoidonc - YES! I found a photo and it matches perfectly. Whew! This morning I looked at it again and convinced myself it was a poison ivy or poison oak or some kind of poison something. And the squirrels in our neighborhood are NUTS (ha!) for those big walnuts, they drag them around all over the place. Mystery solved. Yay! Thanks everybody!

Thanks. OK, I think we are in Brassicaceae, which Iberis is also in, so not so far off. We don't know where you are situated geographically and this suggestion is a plant I have never seen in my life. But have a look at images of Berteroa incana and see what you think. It appears to be widespread in the US.
