Cardinal de Richelieu
Comments (6)There are not different "clones" of 'Cardinal de Richelieu' but there may be mislabeled plants out there, masquerading as the Cardinal. Its blooms are an unmistakable "Concord grape" purple. It has a paler mauve petal reverse, especially evident when the blooms are starting to open. The new blooms have a way of forming a tight rounded ball of petals that unfold suddenly, all at once. The new shoots have a distinctly pepper-like scent when rubbed, and the canes are generally thin and willowy, with relatively few thorns. These characteristics as a whole should help you determine whether you have the correct plant or not. Regards, Paul...See MoreIf Not A Fan Of Extreme Layering--Don't Open!
Comments (56)(Had to scroll back to find the "nude dude". I like 'em.) I'm not a minimalist so all the "stuff" I would find interesting to visit. I'm not a fan of red rooms but so many over stuffed rooms I've seen pictures of are red so maybe that's part of the formula? The massive numbers of pillows on the sofas drive me nuts! I can imagine sitting down (daintily) and having them fall over my shoulders onto the floor, knocking the snifter of cognac out of my hand on the way down. Damage to expensive carpets be damned - I hate to waste cognac!...See MoreSpeaking of purple/mauve, does anyone grow 'Hippolyte'?
Comments (12)Susan, you're a kindred spirit! Belle de Crecy is gorgeous. I've been giving away roses right and left as I downsize the total number and then filling in with a few more historic purples. If I don't reign myself in, my whole rose garden will be purple! Jeri, thank you for the photos and background. I have Christopher's book, too. I'll have to pull it out to read before bed tonight. It's been a long time. I wonder if "Red Runaround," "Brooks Purple," and 'Hippolyte' of commerce are one and the same. "Red Run" looks like a Gallica/China cross? Paul Barden mentions that "Brooks" may be "Red Run." I wonder if I'll get a "Red Run" or "Brooks" if I order a 'Hippolyte' from Rogue Valley Roses. I should try to locate all three and compare them!...See MoreNot Tricolore de Flandre but who am I?
Comments (46)Hi, Jaya. Yes, it looks like you, too, received "Not TdF." Welcome to the Gallica Mystery Club! Mine is starting to resemble Tuscany or Tuscany Superb, but I'm not 100% sure of ID yet. Tuscany Superb is my absolute favorite rose of all time, so at least I received a rose that resembles one that I adore, but I already have a small hedge of TS. So.... And like you, I really wanted TdF, darn it! After my "Not TdF" bloomed, I contacted Heirloom via email (twice) but never received a reply. If you decide to contact Heirloom's customer service, feel free to mention that I also received a "Not TdF" so the company has obviously been selling an incorrectly labeled rose for at least 2 years.
