Changing light bulbs in KOI Pond--Help!

I think I know the answer to this but gonna try here before I tear apart my pond. When I bought my house it came with a pond that is about 3 feet deep. It has dual lights and one of the bulbs has burned out. Well not having installed the lights I have no idea how deep or where the leads run back to the box. But they are hidden and go in and out of several ledges. The installer left no room whatsoever to pull the lights above the surface of the water either. So my stupid question is do I have to have the fixture above the water to replace the bulb? I think yes but again lot of work saved if I don't. Lastly, I am certain the kind of light will have something to with the answer but don't even have that info because light is so hard to get to. THANKS!!
