Awakening has a cool pink color to my eye, so I would avoid any coral/peach or yellow tones. You'd be fine with white Mme Alfred, but also a cool red or rose pink would look good.

Given a few years, 1 Awakening might be enough for that entire structure. What about some Clematis for additional color?

Hmmm, I don't know what I was thinking! I guess I don't remember the true color of Awakening. It's been a long winter! I hope it won't eat the pergola - I've been cutting back the sides and redirecting long canes up and over, I don't mind if the canes get longer, I'd like the top to be covered.

lori-you are right about peach/yellow. Back to the drawing board! I took this photo of it with clematis Polish Spirit - hoovb, I have this clematis with Awakening - there's a white clem with it too - John Huxtable I think it is named. I think this purple/blue works well with it. OK, so MAC may work - but will it be too big? I sort of want a more restrained climber, probably 12' max, so the whole pergola won't come down on me one day!

Clematis 'Blue Angel' is a nice, soft blue-lavender and pretty vigorous...I had a big type II white (Marie Boissilot? sp?) with 'New Dawn' and it was virtually invisible, so do go with a color rather than white.

I have Awakening too and really like it, I have the clem Proteus planted with it. Maybe you should look at the new white climber Lace Cascade. It is a very pretty child of Iceberg. The flowers last forever on it too! They are very large flowers. It was newly planted last year and never stopped blooming. It was disease free as well here where BS is a nighmare.

My take - Awakening will fill that whole structure easily. I'd plant some clematis to compliment it, but if you plant another vigorous rose, you'll have a rose jungle, if you plant a less vigorous rose it will either be (i) overrun by Awakening; or (ii) you'll be constantly hacking Awakening back trying to save the other rose.

I think Viking Queen is a nice companion with New Dawn and Awakening looks like the same color-----Then I read further and realized New Dawn or Awakening would soon take over your structure----

I disagree that Awakening will take over the whole pergola - I'm maintaining the width to the six feet on the end so I have the whole side - 14 feet wide by 12 feet high to cover with something else. I'm pretty severe with the pruners in early spring - there are probably 3 or four main canes that go vertically up and over the top, any extras get removed or I replace older main canes, I cut the laterals back to a few buds in early spring. I always carry my Felcos with me so errant canes that lurk at eye level or below get chopped but mostly I just leave new growth to arch over the garden below if they are out of harms way overhead. This year I'll probably wrap a couple of new main canes around the corner to blend with the new climber. I had Maggie at the corner by the gate, which you can see in the first picture, but I moved it because I was not happy with the color combination. It had started to get tall enough to cover the bottom half of the first lattice panel.

Florence I love Viking Queen with New Dawn! That one goes to the top of the list.

I have a young Awakening and 3 big Mme. Alfred Carrieres, and I love them both.

My feeling is that while the blooms would compliment one another, the foliage (and the canes) would badly clash.

Awakening has dark green and rather glossly leaves, in addition to canes with rather savage prickles. MAC is
lighter arsenical green with a semi-mat finish (and is smooth caned).

I don't think the plants would look well together.

Have you considered Sombreuil? Both the flowers and the plant would compliment Awakening quite well IMO.

Just an idea, but Clair Matin is a great rose which will bloom more frequently than most and if you want more bloom, more often, that might be a consideration.
