quarantining new shubunkin

I purchased two small shubunkin last week. My pond only has one large koi. I lost my other shubunkin and koi this winter, which was very sad. The two new guys are very happy in their quarantine tank however It will be getting very warm soon and I am worried about it being too hot in the little tank for them.

None of the other fish in the store we purchased them from were flicking or appeared ill. We watched for about five minutes. They were put in my quarantine tank with a higher salt concentration for 2 days and now everyday I take about maybe a quarter of the water and put the larger pond water in it so they can acclimate to that pond water. They seem very happy and a lot less shy than other fish I have purchased.

They have been in their tank for a week. I have read about koi pox and so-on but they are not koi. Can shubunkin have koi pox?? I am wondering when I could add them to my main pond because I am concerned about the weather getting very hot. The quarantine tank is about 25 gallons. It is in the shade.

How long would it take for white spot to show up? That seems to be the most common ailment of goldfish. They are not flicking ect. so I don't think they have parasites. any other diseases I should be looking for??

I would be less concerned about your shubbies bringing in carp pox than I would about parasites and fungus and other nasties that are shared ailments between goldies and koi.

You're doing good by QT-ing and slowly acclimating the new guys to the pond water. Chances are that your new fish do not have any ailments, but don't rush it. Problems are harder to cure in the pond than they are in a smaller tank, where it can be more easily monitored and medicated. Parasite eggs incubate over a period of a few weeks, so if they're present they should make themselves apparent soon. I would leave them a few weeks longer just to be safe.

Is the QT tank in the sun? If so, you might want to erect some kind of shade device over it -- even an open umbrella would help. Put a thermometer in there to monitor the temps. How big is your QT? Maybe you could move it into the garage, where it would be cooler.

it is under our garage eave. It is only about 25 gallons however the temp will be reaching over 90 this weekend, so even in the shade I am sure the temp of the water will be reaching almost that.

Kathy and Glenda, your shubbies are gorgeous! Now I definitely want more! How big are they, can't tell from the pictures? The babies are so cute...never saw mine as a baby, too much room for him to hide I guess. All of my goldies, including the shub, and especially the babies from this year, will eat from my hand and nibble my fingers. The shub took longer to tame up, but now he's one of the first to come when he sees me. I'm hoping the baby koi I got from another forum member on here will soon start doing the same--they're adorable, but a little pschitzy yet. They hang with the big guys and come running to feed but dash away at any sudden movement. Linda

You should always quarantine any new fish in a separate tank if you have one. If you don't then I guess an alternative would be to give the new fish a salt dip which will get rid of most parasites but may also stress the fish if newly transported. Sorry not much help.

Most fish can adapt to varing ph levels but it has to be done very slowly. It's possible the original fish was shocked by the ph change. I would do regular small water changes and not mess with the ph. As long as the fish is eating he has a good chance of surviving. Good luck.

She said, "The quarantine tank is about 25 gallons. It is in the shade." The shubunkins can take relatively warm temps and long as there is circulation of the water and filteration and it is kept fairly clean. Need to monitor for ammonia closely. Glenda
