New pond-Our first one,

We did it! still have lots of landscaping and could use tons of suggestions on what to do.. It was supposed to be a small one about half the size and with just a little waterfall but we got carried away. It was our first attempt and it turned out so much better than what I had in my head..

The pond is 8 X 10 X 3 and we used 1 piece of 45 mil liner 20 X 25 for the job. There is no bottom drain or skimmer box; however I do plan to add a skimmer box this summer so we left enough liner for this to be done with relative ease. We used 2300 lbs of stone, not sure what they call it but IÂll look into it. The pump is from a Home Depot kit 1200 gph, came with the waterfall box, and a small liner. We will likely replace the pump with a larger one at some point in time but for now we are content with what we have. The whole pond thing is all new to me so your feedback good or bad is greatly appreciated. Any suggestions on a new pump? Skimmer box? Can I get 1 pump to operate the Skimmer box and falls? Lights?

Thank you! I'm glad you all enjoyed the pictures. The pond ended up being much bigger then I intended it to be but I'm really happy with the end result. I plan on moving the comfy chairs from the back porch to the front one so that I can sit out there and enjoy the sights and sounds of the pond. My pump does have a filter and the water does appear to be clearing up some. The drain hose I set up as an overflow is also working really well which is great since we had a rather nasty storm yesterday afternoon and are due for another one today. I stop to watch the fish swimming around every time I walk by the pond. Yesterday they were chasing each other around underneath the waterfall. And while I was scooping out the leaves blown in by yesterdays storm the fish were chasing the net! My new waterlilies that I added to the pond on friday already have some leaves that have reached the surface of the water. I had no idea that they grew so fast. How likely are the bullfrogs to eat the fish? According to my research bullfrogs seem to eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Is that true?

Thanks. Yea she and my son were pretty shocked. They had no idea we were building it. My son (he's 6) and his friends have spent a lot of time in the stream in the past couple of weeks! Yea horton we're going to do some more planting around the rocks, once the plants take hold should look pretty nice.

wow-- it looks great already. I really like that last little waterfall onto the flat rock right before it spills in the pond. You won't ever regret that you made it bigger than you planned. Especially when all those plants start growing.... :-)

Thank you so much... we are already madly in love with it.. the rocks were so heavy one of them was 400 lbs.. and you cant get into our back yard with a vehicle..the guys are still groaning over the pain of that one. And the bottom rock is cupped so it pools a little before pouring over into the pond.

I brought home several more medium size rocks that I was going to work into the dirt around the pond for landscaping and the guys took them and changed the whole look of the stream and falls.. they knew what I had planned for them but I guess you give stone masons access to stones and they will build.. ha ha.. (give them too many and they'll start building a castle or something off the back of the waterfall) I will post the new pictures tomorrow.

Are you in the Portland area? I have native tadpoles, not sure you would see my offer on another thread. I also have extra plants. I have 9 ponds crammed onto my small SE Portland lot.

I live in springfield the closest to portland I get is salem, how far from there are you? I was there today picking up my nieces and have to take them home sometime in the next week or so.(their mom is in the hopital having a baby). I really want tadpoles I even tried to convince the lady at our pond place to let me have some of hers.

I am in SE Portland, almost Gresham, an hour from Salem.

Hughes Watergardens is on Stafford Rd. in Wilsonville about forty minutes closer to Salem than my house. I know they give away the tadpoles in their ponds. I've seen them bag them for people. Their mailing address says Tualatin but they are closer to Wilsonville. I5 exit 283 head east on Wilsonville Rd. when you get off the freeway, wind around past the high school and head north. Hughes is on the left and has a huge sign. It is only about two miles from the I5 exit.

They have display ponds, gardens and tons of plants for ponds. Well worth a trip. Really wonderful staff too.
