No answers as yet - is it such a puzzle?

I am not familiar with this plant but I suggest that it is possibly in the Hyathincaceae family. Perhaps in one the genus Scilla, Ledebouria, Lachenalia or Drimiopsis.

I don't think it is going to be easy to find because it doesn't look like it would be commonly grown as an ornamental garden plant.

In what part of South Africa did you find it?

It was found at a place called 'Badplaats' (Badplaas?), I think it is in the province of Mpumalanga, to the east of Johannesburg.
No, amongst the many splendid bulbs from South Africa, this one would not rate high as an ornamental plant - but I find it interesting and am curious about it.

I have looked at every source I can think of. The more I look the more certain I am that this is a species of Ledebouria. Unfortunately, I cannot find it anywhere.

The only thing I can suggest is that you send a photo to some South African native plant or bulb growers organisation to try and have it identified. I hope you let us know if you do find out what it is.
