Proud Odontoglossum owner

My wife gave me this Odontoglossum years ago for our anniversary. We call it "the happy orchid," because in our cool Northern California climate it requires no trouble at all.

Does anybody know if it has a name? (You should be able to click on it and go to a page where you can blow it up, if that would help).

I'm thinking of buying another, maybe more exotic, but I'd like something with similar needs. Any suggestions?

I'm going to make a guess of Burrageara Stefan Isler. It's an intergeneric between 4 genera: Cochlioda, Miltonia, Odontoglossum, and Oncidium. I think in general most Oncidium/Odontoglossum hybrids will be happy with the same conditions. Good luck.

I agree. I had a 'Stefan Isler' years ago, it had more white in the lip but it is something in that family. If you really want to see some amazing Onc/Odont hybrids check out the Odontioda hybrids. Scrumptious.

HEy Mike, Actually, I did have some plumeria when I first met you but not many....JUST RECENTLY HAVE I BECOME OBSESSED LMAO!!! I'm telling ya the egg method is awesome!!! IT really thickens those fragile roots up quickly. If you can Mike...just try it with one and plant it in a clear plastic pot. I swear, in 6 months(maybe even shorter if the plumeria is out in full sun and temps over 80),you will see for yourself. You will even see how the roots seek out that egg, and the roots end up doubling in girth!! I will NOT repot unless I have the eggs! IT's not worth it to me, and I have found that I end up with much better blooms. Also, I FINALLY got a fig tree collection going!! I have 7 diffrent varieties now and I will have one more to add here very soon. I tried my first ripe fig and it was DELICIOUS!! To me the flavor is very tropical and yummy! Man, I am not going to convince you on growing mango am I!! I'm telling ya...my citrus take more light and in general there 100% less finicky!! I will have to email some pics of mine. I also cannot get my D.R. to bloom but there seedlings. Your actually warmer and you have a longer growing season than I do. The mango will bloom in the early spring and will ripen before you have to bring them indoors. I hate to see you rob yourself of such an awesome experience just because you don't think you have enough light! Cmon Mike were's your sense of adventure?! Take care, Andrew

My soil is broken down sandstone with clay elements. The location of this palm is fortunate to be near where the rabbit hutch used to be (R.I.P. Bun-Bun). The rabbit had a positive effect on the soil. Otherwise, there is regular irrigation -- brief but regular -- and I fertilize during warm weather months with whatever is available, but at least once or twice with a palm-specific fertilizer to be sure it gets the micro-nutrients. This palm is on the north side of the fence, not much direct sun, but bright light. My lowest recorded winter temperatures are 31F, and that's extreme, burnt the leaf tips a bit, but no serious damage. This winter I had one night as low as 36F, much more normal winter with lows hovering above 40F most of the time. I am 1/2 mile from the ocean, get lots of fog, feels somewhat like New Caledonia where the palm originates. A hot summer day here is 85F after the morning fog burns off, but with humidity, heat is not a problem for this palm. I should think Louisiana would be a great home for this palm, providing you don't suffer hard winter freezes. I like these palms so much I planted three more elsewhere in the garden. Well, one is a hookeri, hoping for an even redder emergent leaf. Best of luck with your chambeys!

I also like the blue color of this pot, and I am now considering getting one. My sister has always had one, and she made terrible meals in it, which is one of the reasons I never got one, but I will make different dishes from my sister. I'm not exactly sure where I will store it, but I think there is room in the cabinet above my refrigerator, which I have my stock pots and large baking pans. Something might have to get moved into the garage, which is where I store seasonal cooking item; i.e., ones that I use only once or twice a year but still have to have. Now that I think about it, I may have already bought a Dutch oven at an estate sale and stored it in the garage. I remember paying $5 for a pan sort of like that last summer, but I think it is perhaps still too small for what I want. It's been a while since I've taken inventory in the garage. Lars

You guys are amazing, I did a search on "Stefan Isler" and that's totally it. Thank you. I remember the tag just said "Odontoglossum," clearly that's only a quarter of the story!

I went to one online orchid seller and in the "Oncidium" category I found some "Bllra." and "Zgd." that blew my mind. Are those Oncidium/Odontoglossum hybrids? Are there other families with similar cultural needs?

Matt, does "Stefan Isler" have a scent? I have a "Nellie Isler" with a rather pleasant spicy fragrance, and was considering getting Stefan to keep her company! Like your Stefan, Nellie has been so easy to care for, with excellent results.

Hi June!

No scent on my "Stefan Isler"--well, I don't remember one, but I must admit that right now I've got such a bad cold it could smell like a gardenia and I wouldn't know.

Nice to know he has a fragrant cousin though!

I'm pleased "Stefan Isler" doesn't have a scent. Just one at a time is enough.

Now you've got me looking and drooling at other Oncidium Alliance photos! I want to order some orchids from a vendor who is speaking at our next Orchid Society meeting, and I keep changing my mind... Most of my orchids are phals, but now I'm trying paphs as well. They are all rewarding once you've got the light/water equation worked out.
