which roses create hips???

Hi All,

I've been searching the web without success for a list of roses that form hips. I know not all do, so I am looking for a little info on which ones do (I feel like dabbling in propagation). Anyone know any useful links or have any info on the subject? Also, listed below is the list of roses that I currently have, so if you see one that you know will form hips, please let me know!! I always cut my blooms after they blow, so I have never gotten to the hip stage.

Just because they don't form hips on their own does not mean they are infertile. A lot of roses will form hips if you polinate them yourself. And just because they form hips does not mean they will germinate. You have several on your list which make good seed parents and some which make better pollen parents. Hot Cocoa, ebb tide, livin easy, iceberg, julia child, westerland, chrysler imperial for sure are seed fertile. Abe Darby sets hips also but makes a better pollen parent. I will give you a link to the rose hybridizers assoc. which has a lot of info and also a forum where you can ask questions. good luck.

If you are using 'dog rose' hips for their vitamin C content, it helps to stew them first and drain off the liquid because there are lots of little hairs around the seeds. Strain it through a fine mesh - a bit tighter than for flour. (Proceed as if you are going to make either rose hip syrup or jelly. About the same quantity of water.) You could probably use R rugosa hips also. They're far less fiddly to skin and clean! A peaceful job for by the fire in mid- to late autumn. Catch them while they're still fleshy and before they 'mummify' on the bush over winter.

Does Rosa virginiana produce hips worth using? Oh, and the York Rose, Rosa x alba semi-plena produces hips that could be used. Its white is tinged with peach-pink, so it looks more milky white than pure white, but it's lovely in bloom! Some people don't care for the colors of Rosa rugosa's later flowers against the color of the ripening hips. If you're sensitive to such things you'll have to consider whether you like the idea of scarlet/tomato red hips adorned with lavender-pink roses. If the idea of that color pair bothers you, go with Rosa rugosa alba. Then you'll have scarlet against pure white.

They are related to apples, Kippy. If they're coloring nicely, like other fruit, they are likely "ripe". Go pick them before the gardener or some marauding rodent finds them! Cut them open with a knife or your clippers, pry out the seeds and either plant them, or clean them as well as you can to remove the pulp and fibers before storing them in the vegetable crisper until the weather cools (around Thanksgiving here, USUALLY, Lord only knows this year...) and you can plant them when the temps are more suitable for germination. Word of warning...the fibers inside the hip are as bad as fiberglass. Don't get it on you. I guaranty your eyes and nose are going to itch like mad once you have them on your fingers so you'll be tempted to scratch them. DON'T! It's the same as getting your hands wet in the kitchen and having to use 'the facilities'. The fibers wash off your hands easily with soap and water, but they are miserable once gotten on you elsewhere. Been there too many times! Kim

I have started roses from seed for the past 3 winters. I gather the hips as soon as they are fully ripe. I take the seed from the hips and plant them immediately. I have had good luck with some and not so good luck with others. I got 40+ plants from seed from one rose last winter. There have been a couple of dozen of the seedlings that have bloomed a couple of times already. I pot them up when they start to bloom. The ones that did not bloom, I tossed. The mother plant of these seedlings is Summer Wind which is a single bright orange. The seedlings range from solid white single to orange double. Seems no two are exactly alike. The rose seed seem to germinate in cool weather. I have never had one to germinate when the weather was hot. I have also had seed to germinate and bloom within a couple of months from 4th of July, Golden showers and some unknown that I did not label. Lots of fun. Go for it....

I shouldn't do this until I get home, but I am pretty sure that I have some OP OLoG seeds in the fridge. I know Hot Cocoa sets hips. Can't remember if I saw any on Bees' Knees, will check this evening.

'Basye's Blueberry' is a rose that was hybridized in your state.
It is a single-petaled bloom, if that is okay.
Very fragrant. It sets lots of hips in the fall, and is a proven fertile parent rose. Thornless too.

In your readings does 'Roemer's Hip Happy' live up to its name? I thought that rose was interesting when you asked after it the other day.

Popping back in to say no hips on BK, but little hips on Ty (which is a really good yellow mini, vigorous and lots of blooms).

Just about everything but Gruss an Aachen. I've never gotten a hip on that one.

Kate, I can't seem to find anyone who grows 'Roemer's Hip Happy'. ARE says one of its greatest characteristics is all the hips that it produces in the fall when not deadheaded. And they say it is small, bushy, & thornless (sounds perfect for my small space). Unfortunately, it is not supposed to be fragrant. I've been tempted to order it, but would like to talk to someone who has grown it first.

You know that is such a sweet looking little rose I might satisfy your curiosity by buying it myself. The more I looked for information for you the more I liked it. There is one gal on HMF who left some positive comments on it in the Comment section. I often forget to read there. I see they have it Ashdown but I will probably get it from Antique Rose Emporium.

thanks ronda, and thanks all. I will let them all get to hip stage at the end of this year... we'll see what happens. Until then i'll experiment with cuttings and see what happens! thanks again.
