Converting Water Feature to Pond

I have a waterfall feature and pond that I recently decided to add plants and fish to. We are using the existing Hayward Super II Pump - 3/4 HP and the Hayward Star Clear Cartridge Filter that is hidden behind a wall with the other pool equipment. I assume that I need a different filter because the waterfall slows down after a few long hours. I am also having a hard time with the PH being high so I have had to add very small amounts of pool acid to the skimmer basket so it circulates thru the system before being introduced back into the pond. This makes the waterfall flow properly again and, don't worry, the fish are adjusting well and seem happy. My question is what do I need to replace as far as the filter is concerned so I don't have to add the pool acid. I don't want to risk killing my fish by having to add pool acid so I need to get this problem corrected as soon as possible.

Any thoughts you can provide would be helpful.
