algicide vs. pond critters

We have a new pond. Living in Boulder, Colorado, it gets a lot of sunlight. Algae is a problem. Our landscaper has put in an algicide a few times and it has worked quite well. However, now I have begun to build the ecosystem. First, I put in some water lilies, water iris, frog spit (very disappointing) and finally duck weed. The plants have tolerated the algicide quite well.

Last weekend, I put in 4 dozen fathead minnows. The theory is that they will help to control the mosquito problem. In 2 - 3 weeks, I am planning to stock it with fingerling bass and bluegills.

I have heard that fish will tolerate an algicide, but crustaceans will not. I was planning to put in 10 - 20 crayfish.

Can anyone offer any insight about this?
