Grab your jacket, it's a crisp day in New England!

We're heading out to Sherburne Falls to see the Bridge of Flowers:

The Bridge of Flowers began in 1929 - a year after the trolley bridge was abandoned, the local garden group got a "great idea" :)

It was a walkable town with lots of places to window shop, and eclectic restaurants:

Time to head down to Stockbridge to see Berkshire Botanical Garden

We arrived to find that what was described as a Harvest Fair on the website, was actually the biggest event of the year for this part of the state....ACK! People looked at us funny as we ducked behind trade tents to observe the perennial borders....

I enjoyed that! I can't help but wonder about practical things re the Bridge of Flowers - e.g. how deep is the soil?; how is drainage managed?...

Hey Saucy! Thanks for sharing your trip (like a mini-vacation for me) which is good, cause I'm still not back in the "real life" mode yet! :-)

That bridge of flowers is so cool and reminds me the first time I went to California. I was amazed to see so much lushness along the highways, plants growing over bridges, etc....I couldn't believe it, such a stark contrast to the city of Chicago...that is until Mayor Daley started encouraging all the planting here.

I love the dahlia/ageratum color combo too. Periwinkle! I just love that color of ageratum and never could think how I would describe the color.

Hmmm, I think we should be over in conversations with the way this thread is going but....I'll suffer my 6 lashes with a wet noodle for adding my two cents. Indian Fry Bread, I wonder if that's the same as the bread made by making a dough out of flour and oil, rolled into a small ball, flattened, then deep fried. It puffs up when it's cooked. This little restaurant we go to served this with a Chickpea curry one day, Annette with her forward ways ended up in the kitchen watching how the bread was made. Connie - Did you throw out the back row of seats somewhere in Wisconsin? lol Where did you find room for more plants? I think you should've posted this on the discussion side. Maybe you could re-post it there. Involvement in the society tours - hosta, peonies or others are what make gardening a fun hobby. As long as I have been a member here Ken_Adrian has been advising members to get involved, join the clubs and volunteer. Like him or not folks - this is one piece of advice you should listen to. Lisa of Putnamgardens invited me on my first MHS garden tour in 2005 because her husband could not make it. I found myself volunteering at the leaf show a couple of weeks later because Lisa's friend Kim needed help and the rest is history. If you are not already involved in your local garden clubs I'm with Ken..... you should join, volunteer, have a lot of fun and meet new friends. If someone had told me 20 years ago I would be meeting people online, going to conventions and staying at their homes (Andrea's) and inviting strangers on bus trips and inviting them to my garden I would've thought they were smokin' something. That pole dancing bunny is a hoot, but I also got a chuckle out of the one wearing the "pasties". LOL. I am trying to catch up on posts, but you guys have sure been busy the past few days and I've got a lot to make up for. Its wonderful seeing all the Easter decor and I'm kind of sad its now got to be put away for another year. :o( I've enjoyed yours so much, and mine too. I have a confession to make....you know that "No More Bunny Rule" I broke when at that neat shop recently? Well I must not have had much remorse, cause I went and broke it AGAIN. I'm am so hopeless!! For my birthday, Jason and Suzie said it was special (turning 65) that I deserved a big gift card...to my favorite antique mall. Hello TROUBLE!!! My friend and I went there on Wed. and I went nuts (or should I say nuttier?). I came home with Rabbit bookends, a rabbit tray, two rabbit vases, a rabbit lamp, and SEVEN little figurines. Heaven help me cause the Devil's got me now!! I also bought a lovely vintage 'lamp table', a pretty rose plate (thanks a lot Luvs!!), and found birthday presents for 3 friends of mine who have summer b.d.s! Candy, you recently emailed me and asked if I didn't have a silver bunny tray like you'd just found. I didn't, it was Luvs who did I think. Well I now have a silver bunny tray too. Its slightly different from yours but same maker. Mine has same center bunnies, but it is longer and more narrow and has other little bunnies. A couple of my finds were so neat I thought. Thank goodness my friend was with me cause SHE spotted them and I'd have walked right past. I'll take photos in the next day or so and share more. hugs, Karen

Hmm, Woody, I'm not sure about drainage! The "beds" were 4ft in width and there was an irrigation hose running along the fenced sides with a spigot ever so often (making me think that it was watered by helpers wielding hoses). The "beds" were mulched with composted bark mulch.

Glad you enjoyed the little getaway, Brenda. I think I remember periwinkle being my mother's favorite crayola color :)

Saucy....just checked out your slideshow. You had a beautiful day for the trip. So, I take it there was a no longer used railroad bridge that the community turned into a garden? Were the stores on the main street of Shelbourn Falls? Your camera is taking wonderful photos, which camera did you get again? LOVED the bee close up...you could just about count the hairs...[g]

Saucy, That is a lovely trip. Almost as nice as going myself. How great that it was such beautiful weather. All the pics are pretty, but the Bridge is extra nice.
The roadside color and the hills look very much like it does here when the colors are on. They haven't got that far yet this fall.

What a grand trip, Saucy! Thanks for taking us along. I, too, can't hear "Berkshires" without thinking of James Taylor. The colors and textures in your pictures are fabulous, and that bee shot is by far the best I've seen. It looks so fuzzy and cute!
The dahlia pictures are tempting me. I'm so terrible about getting them dug for storage in the fall. Lol, can't imagine why--what else could there possibly be to do on a farm in the fall??

That was great! I loved the Berkshire Botanical Gardens. We visited them when we went to Tanglewood in... what year was that?

What a lovely trip. The bridge is a very cool idea. The rose garden we went to in Duluth last year is on top of the interstate.

I love the clarity of your closeups.

Thanks for the cardoon. I'll have to post a picture of the one I have in the potager. It has become monstrous.

Saucy , your are doing so well with FNC (that would be Fancy New Camera) and I loved the visit to the bridge et. al.I think my fave were the bee shot and the tree-awning combo..good eye !

My kind of Road Trip Saucy. It was just what I would like to be doing now. You should have bought the plaque and incorporated it on a gate or tufa piece. Your pictures are so sharp and colorful. Thanks., Norma

Saucy -- So glad you got to see this. When I did most of my work in Massachusetts this was a frequent "getaway from the job" spot to stop. Never got close enough at this time of year to see what the put in, so Thank You for the closeups and taking us along!!
