Name That Plant!

What is this wildflower

I planted a blueberry plant in my yard, but it was already dying and I was just trying to save it. I left the fencing up around the dead plant and in about two weeks this wildflower has taken over the spot. I liked it so I left it alone to grow, and grow did it. Its about 3-4 feet tall now in only a month. What is it. Thanks.

Yup, one of the Smartweeds(Polygonum), also called Lady's Thumb.

I would suggest using the site noted above or looking up each plant in the mix individually and add "seedling" to your search. You may get some other images to compare to. Using botanical names in your searches can help filter out some of the chaff in your search results. Other than that, seedlings are notoriously hard to id. Go back through enough posts here and you will see that immature plants are tough even for the experts. My suggestion is to leave what you don't know. If you want to weed, only pull the stuff that you know and don't want - the easy stuff like grass, lamb's quarters, purslane, ragweed, or whatever is the common stuff in your location. As the seedlings get bigger, they will be easier to ID as "wildflowers" or "weeds." FataMorgana

I agree that it is a cosmos. In our area/zone it is an annual that can reseed. I grow these plants from seed in early spring..Different varieties are from 18" to 3' tall.Someone possibly had sowed the seed or had a plant in the garden previously. Or a bird could have 'deposited' the seed. Here is one in a deep golden yellow that I grew from a free pack of seeds. Jane

Thank you so much, thats exactly what it is according to the pictures and descriptions online. It's almost 6 feet high and about 4 feet wide now. A very interesting plant.

you may think it's an interesting plant, but it's still a weed... grows really big, and the side stems, touching the groud make roots and the seeds... i spend a lot of time trying to get these out of someone's garden...

I'd get rid of it before the seeds drop or you'll never get rid of it. There's a variegated variety that's quite pretty that I grow but the weedy ones are a PITA!
