How does one meet a nice young man?

I find I know generalities, but no specifics ~ this is a subject that hasn't interested me for 40 years +/-, lol. But a sweet young woman I know asked me the title question, and I just blanked on having any suggestions beyond joining a club [which ones where? I dunno] and doing volunteer work.

She's very intelligent, nice-looking but not a beauty; quiet and somewhat shy; a pharmicist [but with many doctors in her family, doesn't really want to get involved with others]; has a good sense of humor, and once she joins in, is a good conversationalist.

Any suggestions for where to meet a similar personality?

I agree with your advice to join a club focused on her hobby, or join a volunteer group to find someone with common interests.

Also, a friend who knows a nice young man personally could introduce her. Then it wouldn't be a stranger.

Update: This replacement arrived today. I unpack it and look it over carefully - the workmanship on this unit (tailoring) is far better that the one that preceded it. So were two other B-Y recliners that arrived along with it. Alas, a successful replacement was not to be. I unfolded the footrest portion of the recliner and the 'tuck-under' segment has a long 14" scratch across the hide, right in the middle of the piece from side to side. I know I didn't do it unpacking it, so it was done at the B-Y shipping dock. My customer expects delivery on this, so I unbolt the piece (easy, four screws) to see if it was swappable with the exact same model and hide of the one in my store. Imagine my surprise when I fold out that footrest and it has the exact same scratch on it! I call B-Y and tell them these are both coming back to them Next Day Air for hide replacement and I must have them back by Friday. Suggest they find out the cause of this issue as clearly is something that has been occurring. It looks exactly like someone grabbed the piece by the front using a furniture hand truck and the nose blade dug into the footrest, but they tell me no hand truck ever touches it as it comes down a conveyor belt to the shipping department. They will have to figure it out and it appears from the conversation this is not the first occurrence of this long scratch in the 4229 chair. I'm disappointed. Its no good to constantly have to work on issues with new-in-the-box pieces and I will probably either discontinue B-Y in my store at this point or remove them from having floor presence once the existing inventory is sold down. markfromsc....when you ask for quotes (I assume you got one from me) please be sure to ask for recommendations at the same time and I will gladly tell you my thoughts honestly and sincerely. If you just ask for a price, thats all you'll get considering the volume of email I get. Thanks Duane Collie

"DSes"=Dear Sons. LOL. Thank you, both. Why didn't I think of Jonathan Adler? I've been looking for Suzani-ish prints with the colors in Marcolo's post. DS not thrilled, so far, with Ikat, Suzani, or paisley. I will run both of your responses by the DS. Poof out; already has a brown leather and a black leather cube, and will reuse one of those. Also built bookshelves and stained them to match existing bedroom furniture. The lines of that lamp would definitely appeal to him. Off to see what he thinks about the sites. More thoughts welcome!

jim, your's was a rare experience. A gift for a kid put into a balanced, conservative mutual fund will produce returns many multiples of the original amount over the medium to long term. If you look back in history to almost any time interval, investments in so-called blue chip companies or, better, mutual funds for diversification, produce returns far superior to fixed income investments like bonds or bank accounts. Or mattresses.

How debonair he looks - even while napping. I love how his hat matches his button down shirt, shorts and even his shoes. Very coordinated outfit. Of course you're not 'off your rocker' you're merely besotted. Completely natural. I'm the last of my girlfriends to become a grandmother and they have wonderfully indulged me by asking if I have any photos. I have one group of friends who have been getting together monthly since 1996 when our kids were juniors in h.s. and we were the prom committee. As each of us became a grandmother we had a Grandmother lunch and gifted the honoree with a Pack 'n Play. It's almost a little sad because they always comment wistfully how much they miss those baby days. So savor each moment.

I know she's well educated, but taking a course at a local college just for the joy of it is one way. I drop back in school every once in awhile to take a course I really am interested in, but couldn't take when I was going there full time toward a degree. So many young people are going back to school to get an edge on the changing job market. I'm talking adults of all ages, they make up about half the class at our local branches.

Do something for fun where there is an abundance of men. Flying lessons. Learn to bowl. Join a bicycling group. Take up golf or go to a gym. The upside is lots of good exercise as a fringe benefit.

Run for a local office or school board. It's the networking and exposure with other young, vibrant people on a repeated basis. Doing things you sincerely enjoy (or might enjoy) doing.

A lot of colleges offer continuing education classes on everything from gardening to managment to dancing. I met a very nice lady in a cake decorating class at the local technical college.

How come it always seems when I know a nice young man, I don't know of any nice young women? No, that came out wrong. I don't know of any nice young women looking for a boyfriend and vice versa. Wish you weren't so far away - I work with this very nice young man....Whom we (her mom and I) are going to introduce in a casual way to her daughter. Both of them have come off long term relationships that went south.

Another friend said her son met a girl on one of those on-line dating sites. It seems to be working. She is about 4 hours away.

Ahhh, classes! That's what I trying to remember!

I know she doesn't do the club scene, and her religious affiliation doesn't seem to provide any suitable group assemblies. I'm not sure what hobbies would apply. She's very quiet until she gets to know you, and that translates into apparent shyness when in groups of unknown people, but maybe my DD could join something and get her involved.
