Name That Plant!

6' tall weed? with purple stem

Does anyone know what this might be? I'm in Pittsburgh, PA and this has been growing at the edge of the woods since before we moved into the house 6 years ago. It dies back every year and sprouts 6' tall every time. The little buds turn into berries. The stem is purplish/pink and is rather sizeable, probably good 1-2" thick.

I can't get your links to work, but your description sounds like pokeweed, Phytolacca americana.

I got to your album which had bittersweet nightshade and pokeweed in it so it looks like poke is a winner!

Cosmos can get pretty darn tall. I've had them bigger than me, but the clue here besides no cosmos flowers is the fall color. I found this reference: Dog fennel is a plant of roadsides and waste fields and is a short lived summer perennial growing 3-9 feet tall. The leaves are fragrant and divided into thread-like segments which give it a fern like appearance. The stems are hairy and reddish in color. Yes, it is likely the variety. I've noticed some eyes on heavily purple toned flowers are purple, if you cut into the tuber, IT has a purple tinge just inside the skin, and it applies to the stem as well. I don't think you have anything to worry about, except the frosty nights- and those are manageable as you said.

Thanks! I'd been wondering what that other one with the purple flowers was too. I grew up in west Texas and we didn't have those there so I'm not familiar with them.
