Please tell me what to do with this 'POND'???
Comments (6)It sure sounds intentional and slightly taken care of. Otherwise I would think it would have naturally filled in. I assume that you have already poked around with a shovel or something, and not found a rubberized liner at the edge. I suppose that filling it in would cost some money. Adding a rubber EDPM liner would cost $400+. Perhaps much more or impossible depending on your accuracy on size. I have heard that there are some clay like materials that can help seal natural soils. I have no idea of costs or workability. Perhaps someone here can help on that approach. Surprisingly little else is really needed. I have a utility pond that I use for watering. It is nothing but a lined ditch fed by a french drain with 3 goldfish (now ~40) and some acqurium plants (seriously invasive if they got into natural water). There is no pump or filtering. There have been periods when the fish got no extra food, but they have grown larger than fish in my smaller maintained and fed decorative pond. Assuming the object IS a reflecting pool, you could still add an in pond pump just to circulate the water around in the deeper part, but it wouldn't be necessary....See MoreWhen you name your .27c mosquito fish ...
Comments (10)Thanks Anne and Sleepless. I buried Missy the Sarasa Comet. I don't know all that much about pond fish diseases, but comparing to a write up on GAB boards, the only thing I saw was indications of Ich. I did do a significant water change (more than 25% less than 50%), took out the plants, cleaned out various muck and salted for disease. Now, my questions are two part - when can I put my lilies back in and should I be 'buffering' the pond with some crushed coral? Everything I read about salt being bad for lilies is why I'm wanting to test my salinity levels. I know that salt doesn't evaporate, but I'm unclear on how long to leave the water salty before I do water changes. The 3 remaining are looking and acting normally. I can't see any indications of Ich (not that I can see them all the upclose and personal like). Oh, and I definitely have at least one small gray fry swimming around in the pond. Still can't believe my crew of feeder fish is old enough to spawn. ~dianne...See MoreThe Calverys on its way! (Mosquito Fish)
Comments (7)Gambusia are evil fish? Dude, have you ever noticed that a majority of fish not only eat their young But also the young of other fish? as for release into the wild? I think that any one that would do such a thing is a total idiot! People have done this with many species of animals in the past (some with very good intentions) with disasterous results! I am not that stupid! (although I do admit to some less than "Albert Einstien" moments!LOL!) also, you state,"They are Okay at eating mosquitoes, probably about as good as guppies," have you ever kept this fish!? I have NEVER seen a guppie eat no where near as much as Gambusia!? They are not just "OK" at eating the larvea, They are little eating machines! =) to try to compare their appetite to guppies is a joke! another statement,"IMO a betta would be a better choice for moth larve control, as bettas are nicer fish in general, and pretty to boot" OK?...the bettas found in the wild are a much better choice than the slow, lanky, slow eating "showfish" people sell at most, if not all, pet shops, they are nice looking fish, but in my opinion thats all they are, one betta wouldnt be able to eat all the larvea in a month let alone a day! not even a wild betta, If I would have gotten a wild betta he would have had a steady supply of food for the rest of his life, thats all, the moths reproduction cycle is way to fast for the slow appetite of a single betta, my Gambusia knocked them out before the end of the day! Yes they are aggresive, as a lot of others are, but that was the kind of fish I needed for the job, not the slow betta? have you ever kept bettas with other bettas? (male or female?) they are among the most aggresive fish Ive ever seen! people dont realize this due to the fact that most have only seen the quite little guy hovering peacfully in his little bowl, yeah put him in with others of his kind, youll see what relentless little killer demons they really are! and the part that kills me is that they dont eat the other fish! they just want to kill them! They do this instinctively due to the fact that in the wild they live mainly in small "puddles" of mostly stagnant water and have to do this in order to survive in an environment that is lacking most everything, food, oxygen, and so on, they need what little they have for themselves, this is also why they are slow eaters and have a very slow batabolism., so yeah, Gambusias got the job done....See MoreMosquitoes
Comments (5)Yes, I've see that stuff all over Pinterest, too. It doesn't work. Most mosquitoes are active in the early morning and in the evening - keep the dogs in a screened porch or inside during those times. Check your yard carefully for standing water - it only takes a week for a small puddle to produce dozens of mosquitoes. They spend the day resting on low bushes or in tall grass: keep the area around your house clear of brush and weeds....See MoreLexarose
