Name That Plant!

Plant looks like cantaloupe, fruit looks like cucumber?

I am posting for a friend. She had a volunteer plant come up in her corn rows. The leaves resemble a cantaloupe and the fruit kind of looks like a cucumber, and she says it smells like a cucumber. Two years ago she grew banana cantaloupes, and acorn squash last year. Can you identify it? I hope I can post these pictures, this is my first time posting at all on the forum!

The armenian cucumber is a melon that bears a long cucumber-like fruit that looks, smells, tastes like cucumber. If it isn't that perhaps the banana melon was a hybrid and this plant is a seedling that is a throwback to a parent.

The "banana melon" I grew last year had orange flesh and looked like a melon not a cuke inside. It was an heirloom variety melon. Was this the type your friend grew as well? I wouldn't expect the fruit picture to be an offspring of that if so.

It does look rather squash or cucumber like in the fruit. Does your friend compost?

That happens to my grapefruits, but I don't do anything. I have plenty that mature. I don't know what is causing it, but I don't use any pesticides on my property. The anoles take care of things. Citrus is the host plant of the Giant Swallowtail. The caterpillars feed on the leaves. If you spray, you could be killing potential butterflies. How old/large is your tree? Mine is about 12ft high.

i dont know which elm ..... but up here in MI .. there are some elms that arent worth the ground they stand on ... even with hundreds of acres ... such as siberian elm ... see link below ... just cuz the old dude planted.. does not mean.. it is a valuable plant ... never forget that ... https://www.google.com/search?q=siberian&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=siberian+elm you might want to try the tree wizards in the tree forum ... as there are a couple arborists.. i have never seen in this forum ... ken
