Excellent Rogue Valley order

Rogue Valley sells bare root 5 gallon roses now-the result of those nice bands that keep growing I am sure. I thought to give it a try to see how it went. What nice roses! It is more expensive than growing out the bands yourself of course but instant bushes! Wonderful packing too.

I got

White De Meaux-the band sized one I had was weed wacked

Orpheline de Jullie- I am convinced the two I have from

Pickering are a NOT OdJ

I also treated myself to a few bands

DÃ©sirÃ©e Parmentier-which I have wanted for a long time

Cesonie- a Moss I dont have and dont know a thing about

Umbra- A Paul Barden Gallica-gorgeous picture.

I would do this again...

I don't grow any of those roses but certainly agree about Umbra - the picture is a heart stopper. If only gallicas grew here and were remontant. So many of them are absolutely exquisite. I did want to add that my experience in dealing with Rogue Valley has been extremely rewarding. They go out of their way to be helpful and I've received long and detailed answers whenever I had a question or concern. And, every one of their roses has done wonderfully well. It really is a quality establishment.

I was very happy with mine as well. I ordered bands, not big ones, but they were still a very nice size! :o) I got Smoky and Paul Barden's Dragon's Blood. I did the order before Mr Barden's new ones came out. I would for sure have gotten Umbra as well. I do have some nice purple Gallicas already, and actually I am leaning toward getting Marianne. I think that would look amazing next to my Cardinal de Richelieu!

Does anybody know if RVR will ever carry any of the older Barden roses? There are a few I would really like to have.

hi, Jeannie, Thanks for the information. The Pickering roses are coming April 1 and I'm hoping to have the holes dug by then so I can direct plant. They're all gallicas so I figure will be okay. I doubt if I'll see any blooms from them until next year. the others are from High Country and won't be here until June as a couple won't be ready until then. I'm guessing I should pot up over the summer and plant in the fall? Have you ordered from HC? I am not quite sure what to expect from them - they were the only ones I could find that had a Canary Bird/Manchu Rose, so I went ahead and ordered the Darlow's Enigma, Ghislaine de Feligonde and alba semi-plena I wanted. I have been thinking about ordering from Chamblee's also, but have been counting the cost of the dynamite I'm going to need for hole digging and may not be able to afford any more roses or back liniment... I'm not used to coddling roses but I think you're probably right. Gean

OK, I didn't upload the pics I took to my photobucket account yet, so I'm being lazy and offering any of you on Facebook the opportunity to see them in my "NJ Garden" album. My Heirloom Roses order came two weeks ago, and that pic is the 37th in the album, followed by a shot of 'Souvenir de Victor Landeau' as it's leafing out this year (I got it as a band in April 2012), some up-close shots of the "Reine des Violettes" a-la Heirloom Roses, and a snapshot of the whole order potted up and individual shots of each. Then there's an "after" pic of one of the future Gallica beds, after I removed dead and "in the way" growth of the arborvitae, and finally the Vintage Gardens and Rogue Valley Roses order I received on Thursday. I'm overly meticulous with potting them up, so I got through half in four hours on Thursday, working until it got too dark to see. Then this morning (Friday) I finished the other half in another four hours, just in time to get cleaned up and ready for work. If I posted them all on here, I think I'd end up freezing someone's computer. One thing I have to say -- I notice that the medium Vintage uses for their bands is very "rocky" and seems both overly heavy for shipping weight, and prone to drying out en route. Some of their bands were wilting when I took them out, but perked back up after getting a long, slow drink. Rogue uses more of a peat-based medium, which seemed both lighter in weight and able to retain more moisture. Of all of the RVR bands, only 'Golden Buddha' seemed a bit wilty, but it also perked back up soon after being repotted and watered. My potting mix this time was equal parts peat moss, Bovung composted cow manure, and shredded hardwood mulch. I like how this mix felt, a nice mix of light and fluffy with enough water-holding ability and a good mix of slow-release organic nutrients for growth. I lined the bottom of each pot with newspaper to keep the mix from coming out of the holes but still allow water to drain out. I sprinkled Jobe's Organic Knock Out Rose food in layers as I added potting mix, using 1 cup for the 2-gallon pots and 1/2 cup for the 1-gallons. I think I prefer the 2-gallon pots, but did use the 1-gallons for the bands that were either much smaller, or for roses which themselves don't grow that big, and will be planted in the ground after I place the larger roses. I'll pot up the 1-gallons into 2-gallons later in the season. I'll keep updating that album as I go along. :-) ~Christopher Here is a link that might be useful: NJ Garden Pics

Your Comice de Tarn-et -garonne is gorgeous, Micheal! Thank you for posting these pictures. I like seeing what Comice can do. I received a mature Comice from someone this past January, and we had to cut it WAY back to dig it up and transport it home. It’s finally starting to recover from the move. My Comice is sending up new growth and a random bloom here and there. I can’t wait for my Comice to bloom as much as yours! Isn’t the fragrance wonderful? I have ordered many roses from RVR over the last few years, and have never been disappointed. They carry rare roses which I cannot find elsewhere. I visited their nursery once. It is on top of a hill, surrounded by an older housing development. The nursery growing fields surround a small house, which I think is just used for an office. They have beautiful gardens all over the top of that hill. I was surprised at how small the entire property was, and impressed by what they are accomplishing in that space. Jackie

Have made several orders from Rogue Valley, excellence in all respects. I have a fairly large order coming in March and cant wait! Janet always sends great plants - when the new Barden roses came out, I had to call and get a couple of those too! She has some very different and unusual varieties - this nursery is highly recommended!

PacNW, give Janet a call and ask her about the Barden roses. It wouldn't surprise me if she'll accomodate you. What a splendid nursery. Patricia, I'm so jealous. This definitely warrants a trip north in the spring!

Janet is really a wonderful person and her staff is super helpful. I had to find out if roses in my order were mature enough to be bare rooted. The response time was amazing and the information spot on. They have been expanding. It will be excieting to see what they will be coming up with.

I bought about a hundred roses last year from them. The only negatives i can say is that I've had a very few maybe 5 tops bands that were very tiny and didn't survive, and the shipping price of the non-bare root 5 gal. But everything else has been top-knotch. very good customer service. I really think that everyone should treat themselves to at least a couple of those 5 gal roses. I bought 5, they are spectacular.
