How do I trim roots of Bougainvilla to put in smaller pot?
Comments (6)Thanks to all of you who have offered care information. I still haven't mustered the nerve to pull it out of the pot to examine the roots yet, but have purchased a suitable bonsai pot to place it in. Because there is so little soil in it's plastic gallon nursery pot, I may place it in another pot with better soil until spring, then trim/spread the roots and place it in the bonsai pot I purchased for it. Jason, we have the same birthday. December 5th. Christopher, I found the links on your home page quite informative. I'll post more after I've re-potted and see how it's doing during our mild San Diego winter. Thanks again to all of you for your suggestions and help....See MoreUnruly phal roots! What to do???
Comments (7)If you saturate the medium in the pot and get the roots really hydrated, you can gently pull the roots through the holes when the pot is turned over. My very first orchid insisted on sending roots out into the open and I insisted they stay inside the pot. I worried the poor thing to death trying to make her behave. I finally gave up and put her in a basket and now permit her to do what she wants. I know it is a she because of her insistence that she knows best. I agree with upping the light to help her bloom. Under fluorescent lights, my first orchid gave me a nice spike every year with blooms that lasted for months. This year she got moved to a G/H and for the first time, she is giving me more blooms and a branched spike to boot and is blooming a couple of months earlier than in the past. She was just waiting for me to learn. Each orchid is an individual living thing. Brooke...See MoreRoot pruning my potted brug?

Comments (2)If you root prune routinely, the tree will never reach its full size potential. Think bonsai - root pruning is a way to maintain the tree at a significantly smaller size than if it were left to its own devices in the ground....where no root pruning happens :-) Growing trees in a container is a natural dwarfing process. The root system is simply unable to expand to its full potential, therefore the top growth will not either. If you continue to pot up the tree to increasingly large containers, the growth of the tree will also follow suit. And this annual (or so) up potting eliminates or substantially reduces the need to root prune to maintain a healthy and appropriately container sized root system as well....See Morerichardol
