An Unlikely Duo--Krauss & Plant

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Raising Sand is, to my taste, a great CD. It'd make a great stocking stuffer.

It's not an easy one to categorize, the songs cross a spectrum from Gospel to funky remakes and blues. (not a music critic here).

Oh, good taste Michael. I picked this up about a month ago, just had to get it after hearing "Gone, Gone, Gone" a few times. The vocals get to me, something about the registers (not a music critic here either). I'd have left out track #4, and there are waaay too many slow ballads -- or should I say more up tempo rocking would be a fine addition, a little more Led Zepplin in the mix. But I really like the CD, and it grows on me more and more. Produced by T Bone Burnett, I knew it had to be good.

Michael, thanks. I watched something on TV about the producing of this CD several weeks ago and had meant to buy it for my brothers christmas stocking. Forgot.

But I still have time....

I'm having some success with rooting hormone but still unsure if i might be using too much soil. I actually stopped using soil accept to lightly cover the ends and have success, I have about 40 leaves I'm trying to root, I have branches too. I've rooted the branches in water but that seems like cheating so I'm sticking to the rooting ormone and soil. I haven't developed a full proof technique. sorry for cutting in on you, I've been lurking for a month and can't get the hang of things here. I really do love your succulent, and have very small ones similar. Exciting!

Snakes are okay. I like snakes because they eat those wiggley, slinky, creepy, crawly, thousand-legged bugs that give me goosebumps and make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It could be 98 degrees with high humidity but let one of those crawly things get near me and I have a chill of arctic proportions. Same with bees altho' not so much with honey bees. I've slowly learned to be patient with what's growing in my garden and am grateful for the simple fact I don't have to be in charge. I just leave it to Ma Nature and help out as best I can for a good result. Not all outcomes are what I envisioned but they're often better. I refuse to let stress rule over my favorite pasttime or steal one iota of the pleasure & eye candy it gives me.

McMansions on unlikely lots

When the word McMansion is hurled as an epithet, it comes from those who seem to genuinely hate the idea of people having the freedom to live as they wish. They are often the same ones who decry middle class flight from urban areas, and wring their hands over the alleged harm of urban sprawl. It is an attack on middle class prosperity, and against families in search of better schools and child-friendly spaces. Those who cry McMansion are every bit as contemptuous toward a subdivision filled with 2,000 sq ft vinyl clad homes with fake shutters and small, newly planted trees on 0.15 acre lots as they are of 4,000 sq ft homes on 0.35 acre lots, and of any size houses built on 2-to-5 acre lots. They don't like when the houses look the same; they don't like when a new house doesn't match the character of the older houses in the neighborhood. They don't like infill lots being developed. They are furious when an outdated 1,200 sq ft home with a leaky basement, decaying plumbing, electrical fire hazards, and cramped rooms is torn down and replaced with a more spacious, energy-efficient home designed to accommodate life in the 21st century. Why, oh why can't the middle class be herded into high-density urban communities, where they can provide a meaningful buffer between the rich and the poor? Why can't they be forced to endure a cost of living so high that they will forsake car ownership, and feel pressured to limit their family size? Why can't they just cry "uncle" already, and confess that the lives of hipsters, bohemians, affluent empty-nesters, and fashionable singles is superior to the middle-class aspirations of suburbanites?

as to question 2.. in my MI ... i divide perennials in fall.. 6 to 8 weeks before dormancy .. so the roots can settle in.. and start pumping water for GROUND FREEZE in january ... in GA.. you are way overthinking all this ... enjoy the flower show if any.. when night start cooling in fall.. dig them up.. throw them around the yard .. see if they break apart naturally .. and replant the pieces .. it will grow roots all winter in GA ... and there will be a good chance they will bloom next year.. depending on the size of the pieces .. just do it.. and quit worrying or making excuses ... to repeat.. divide AFTER flowering.. if you do it before ... then you risk missing this years flowers ... but.. july and august is not transplant or diving time.... its just too hot .. especially at night .. so we wait until fall .. consider night a cool recovery period for the roots to pump water lost during the day ... on a transplant/division... yw ken

I agree, Michael, I really like this CD. And I agree with catkim that it could have a few more upbeat songs. But the singing is wonderful. I give it 4 stars (out of 5). BTW, I bought and downloaded it to my iPod.

Their voices complement each other so well.

Plant certainly still "has it."

There are those brief moments when they fuse and form a third voice. I just love it.

The more I listen to it the more I like all of it; it seems like most albums these days move the other way.

I bought this too and it does grow on you. I saw Alison Krauss and Union Station at the Berkeley Greek theater this past summer and it was a wonderful show. Yesterday I read that Robert Plant is going to tour with Alison next summer.

I downloaded it the first day, I was psyched. I really like it because Plant is so understated! Also, there was an article in the NYT a couple of weeks before the release. T Bone asked each of them for a list of songs that would potentially be recorded. Both Plant and Krauss turned in lists of mostly melancholy songs. Hence the downbeat tone. They announced European tour dates last week, I can't wait for the US dates. I saw AKUS a long time ago (pre-O Brother) and they were great then too!

love the cut sister rosetta goes before us! Also just bought the new Sweeney Todd soundtrack with Johnny Depp and Helena Bohnam Carter...not great not bad can't beat Angela Landsburry if you see the move try to find the DVD of Angela in the stage version with Geroge Hearn...wow saw them on stage...wow. Allison Krauss did a great song called Slumber my Darling I think it's now out of print in the US it;s a Stephen Foster lullabye
