Pond lining?

I have been planning for a 12'x18'x 40" fish pond. I have it "drawn" into the grass where I want it to go. I have a 7' tall waterfall structure built into the adjacent bank and I am trying to get the pond itself dug out. It is has allot of clay so it is hard to remove ( I was hoping that maybe the clay would hold water...). My question is, after looking at all of the lining options from epdm to pvc etc. I really would like to find a natural way to keep the water in the pond. Is there a way, or is epdm the best thing to do? I am retired on Soc Sec. and the expense of these liners ($250 to $500) has kept me from getting it done sooner ( I started 3 years ago). Any ideas would be appreciated. I will get the pump for the water fall and the plants, fish etc. when I get the actual pond made and then I'll probably have more technical questions.

Thanks very much.
