Water lilies for the dummest of dummies.

Okay, I got a deal on actually growing water lilies at Walmart. Two hardy lilies and one mini cattail for 2.59. I put them in the mesh bags to start off with and in two days they are already putting on growth. But, I have no idea how to plant them.

I have a pots that plants came in that I'm using and clay soil from the yard which I read is okay for both of them. I have smallish rocks that I can use to cover but wonder if they are too big and should get some pea gravel.

The tuber has some smaller stems growing out of the sides so I don't know how to bury the tuber. Can anybody tell me if these will work. Do I add more soil to cover part of the tuber just cover with rock to the bottom of the crown area. I don't see any other way but to cover the small stems growing from the side of the tuber if I bury it at all.

What am I doing wrong and what do I do next? Are these rocks okay or should I get pea gravel? I do have fertilizer tablets that came in the kit.
