what is this? and how to get rid of it?

Hi all, I have two tubs in which I grow miniature lotuses. One tub I had for 2 years, although i had no blooms, the water was always clear. This year I started a tub with some of my old lotus from the other tub into the new one. The new tub had this over on the top. Due to contamination from me , now both tubs have this on the surface. The lotus leaves seem to be healthy. But i would like to know what is this and how worried I should be.

It's duckweed. I recently noticed a small patch of it starting to grown in my pond as well- no idea where it came from. There are a lot of ways to get rid of it, but just skimming it out with a fine net is probably your best bet.

Not necessarily duckweed. Have you ever had Azolla (aka mosquito fern)? I think it looks like duckweed when it is just starting out.

Looks like Dove Weed or Smooth Crab Grass. Does not really matter what it is as the control for all broad leaf grassy weeds are the exact same. Best control is is get control before it emerges using pre-emergence herbicides. Too late for you. For post emergence use any type for broad leaf control and safe for you lawn type. MAMA was excellent but the Employment Prevention Agency decide you should not use it. Today try a product containing quinclorac aka Weed-B-Gone Max + Crab Grass Control available at any box store. What color are the flowers? Do they have a scent to them? It looks similar to something in the Locust family, HOWEVER, there are a few weed impersonators out there, too.

from the other post: our neighbors have a ferocious vine growing on their side of our fence and we think it’s from their vine. We’re good friends so we’re going to talk to them about removing it. ==>>> imo ... there is only one option .. kill it at the source .... obviously .. its hyper aggressive ... with an incredible root mass .. mowing wont stop it. lawn spray isnt going to kill the root mass .. and every time you knock down one sprout.. 4 to 6 weeks later ... it is replaced ... and the more mature the root mass gets.. the more that will come ... imo.. your only option is to destroy the mother plant.. use a stump killer.. and spend a year or 3.. killing every sprout.. until the root mass dies ... you can either volunteer to dig it up .. pay to have it removed .... or move .. lol ... since you claim they are good friends.. it sounds like it can be worked out ... once the mother is killed.. you can obtain the applicator at the link .. and fill with stump killer or undiluted round up [which is labeled as a stump killer] ... and snip each sprout and apply one drop of killer.. for as many years as it takes.. to kill that root mass .. do not store near the hot dogs ... the key is.. one drip .. and if you knock over the applicator... it doesnt all run out ... IT IS NOT A SPRAY THING.. uhmmmm... if you want an id.. you probably forgot the pic ... and think about this.. if you threw away the citrus back when.. maybe you wouldnt have had trouble with this one ... isolate both plants... preferably outside for summer.. and i would probably use a systemic drench and insure they are 'clean' before you take them back in the house in fall ... and i might take all the houseplants outside and treat them as well ... ken

Looks like duckweed to me also. A very tiny floating aquatic plant. Harmless but grows like gangbusters lol.
You can net it out but it does compete with algae for nutrients so is actually kind of useful , In your small areas not really a problem since Lotus have emergent leaves no competition at all .
Your experience with lotus sounds like mine.. Get lots of growth, no flowers I built a 4x5 foot marsh garden for them but planted EVERYTHING but lotus .lol.
Always thought the leaves very attractive even without flowers.. What variety are you growing?? gary

Hi Gary,

If it is not harmful i will leave it alone. I tried cleaning it, but it comes back in 2 days in the entire tub.I have Momo botan and Chawan basu miniatures. Will it keep mosquitoes breeding under control too?

Yep, its duckweed. Most people struggle to get rid of it , I wind up paying for it. The fishies, koi in particular chomp it up faster than it grows.

I would love to have a duckweed "problem". My fish see it as a special treat and it helps keep the algae down.

Duckweed here is about six dollars for a 4 oz cup! Lucky you. A couple of hungry goldfish makes it hard to grow here.

Ditto here - I BUY Duckweed and can't get it to 'take over' because my goldfish eat it like candy - I even have trouble with Parrot Feather, they like to nibble the roots.

You can just dip some out occasionally to thin it out .
It is pulling nutrients from the water so IS keeping algae down. Only thing I've found effective for mosquitoes is fish. Can't imagirigfileurl" value="/forums/load/ponds/msg0509223631221.html">
