Teflon tape or paste on external pump fittings?

The instructions for my Sequel pump say to use teflon paste rather than tape for threaded fittings. What is the reasoning behind this recommendation? As I have to remove my pump each fall for the winter any threaded fittings with paste are a pain (the leaf basket fitting). I did not unthread the fitting on the outlet of the pump last fall and when I started the pump up today it was leaking on that fitting. I had a heck of a time getting the fitting out. It actually broke and am not sure if I wrecked the threads on the pump outlet. I won't know till tomorrow when I get a new fitting. How long should the paste last? Do others remove the fittings each year and repaste or do most people use tape?
