Name That Plant!

Help required to identify plant please

Hi I had a plant dumped by my gate. It was 3 ft high without a pot and looked dead . I took it in re potted it and trimmed it back, gave it water and feed . Now a couple of weeks on it has now variegated leaves with 1cm size purple flowers that close up of a night time. So I can look after it well as i am a very novice gardener please can someone help identify plant.

Duranta, maybe? A closeup of flowers/foliage could confirm.

I think it's a variegated Solanum. Well revived by you!

Can be quite a nuisance weed in gardens here. It is statuesque but needs watching to get the self sowers before they root too deeply. Dries well for winter decoration and used in some naff crafts e.g. 'cute' mice. Also used in National Trust houses to stop you sitting on the historic chairs. If there's a teazel head on the seat, don't sit down. It's a fascinating plant historically. The name 'fullonum' comes from it's use in 'fulling' woollen cloth. It reminds me of Cup Plant (Silphium perfoliatum). I have a couple and they get to 8 feet, easy. But what it would be doing in the middle of England, I don't know. Is the main stem square and VERY sturdy? Here is a link that might be useful: Illinois Wildflower page on Cup Plant - pix

That's quite a variety of plants and while they look lovely in combination NOW, they will not continue to do so long term as they require quite different growing conditions in term of light, water needs and even the type of potting soil. I would pot them up individually or at least with like plants together (ie., the kalanchoes). That will simplify their care needs considerably. And while I am no houseplant expert, I think the ID's are pretty much dead-on.

Yes, it is a variegated Solanum. Compare with Solanum rantonetti 'Variegata'. Great windfall - would cost you 13 -15 quid to buy. Not hardy for us here in the UK but if you have a conservatory, porch, greenhouse or even a cool windowsill you can bring it in for the winter. Just one thing - if you have children make sure they understand not to nibble it.
