My guess is snails. I have the same problem. I'm going to try to put pieces of lettuce in there, and fish them out when the snails are on them. I had lilies for about 7 years without problems, and now they are full of holes from the snails. Bummer.

Hi Catherinet, Thanks for the suggestion. I do have one lily in bloom but the leaves look terrible with all those holes. I'll check tomorrow to see if I can see any snails in the pond.

I had a similar problem last year; dime sized holes and for the life of me could not find the culprit. Someone on here said to check the underside of the leaves at the very edge of the holes for glass worms. They are extremely hard to see since they are clear, a magnifier would help and no more than 1/4" long, but they can sure do some damage. As a remedy I removed the most heavily infected leaves and the others I brushed the bottom of the leaves with a soft brush to remove them.

I would look for glass worms. They are very difficult to see unless you get in just the right light. They can be easier to see if you check the pads after dark with a small flashlight.
If practical, you can keep rubbing them off the backside of the pads every day until you've wiped them out. There is also a caterpillar killer that can be safely used in the pond that works on these guys but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. Maybe someone else will.:)

Thank all of you for the tips. I've found the culprits. They are snails. I fished quite a few out of the pond today and will keep on checking it every day until I get it all straightened out. Thanks everyone.

high 5 to Catherine :) I read this post and from other gardening, was wondering if it was skeltonizing due to a virus. Glad to find out it was not. I'll keep this in mind. Thank you Catherine
