Is it to soon to plant a lotus tuber to put in my pond?

I want to buy a lotus tuber for my pond. I was wondering is it to early to pot one up and put it in my pond? Also, should I go ahead and put fertilizer tablets in my lilies?

No, its not too early for the lotus. I'm potting mine up tomorrow, after this hopefully last night at 29 degrees.
I'm not sure about the lilies. I know with lotus you're not supposed to feed them until they have about 6 leaves, but I think its not the same with lilies. I would probably wait until I see a little growth. Where are you going to buy your lotus tuber from? It may take awhile to get here, if its an online source. Good luck!

Im going to buy the tuber at a garden center near me, that also has an online store..

There is a classic book called "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds." The first chapter is devoted to the Dutch tulip mania of the early seventeenth century. Tulips were in demand, but things went crazy and tulips were selling for astronomical prices! There is one story of a poor sailor visiting someone's home. When he awoke the next morning there was a great confrontation going on over a missing tulip. Seems he mistook a bulb worth thousands for an onion and ATE it before going to sleep. He spent the next several years in jail for the "theft." Please don't put your doggie into jail! He just thought it was a treater!

If they have little green sprouts coming out of the eye that are about an inch tall, then they definitely should be potted up. Then give them a good watering, put them under lights or natural sunlight, and watch them grow. Don't over water them. So after the initial good watering, I would let them go for about a week before watering again, but that depends upon the medium in which you plant. Don't let them dry out completely, but don't overwater. Watch the leaves. When they START to droop, they are telling you that they need more water. Water lilies need to be divided. I have never know anyone who harvested seeds from them. Many plants that you normally plant in the ground are excellent pond plants. Many ornamental grasses grow beautifully in the pond, such as zebra grass. Iris, (not bearded iris) such as swamp iris or Louisianan iris grow like weeds, as do Elephant ears, Canna, horse tail (equisetum), and papyrus. Just pot them up, using heavy clay soil, if possible; Line your pot with screen or coffee filters if they have holes in them. Top the soil with small rocks or gravel so that your soil won't float away. Sink the pots in the pond and watch them grow! Good Luck! Janie

Hi Kim,
I live in central Indiana, but I've ordered things from Wm. Tricker's. Its in Independence, Ohio, just south of Cleveland. But I think that's pretty far from you, right?
I spent a year at Mt. Union College in Alliance about 100 years ago. That's pretty close to Canton/
Do you know what lotus you're going to buy?

Hi Kimmy,

I was just at Lily Blooms with Mom today. I picked up some varigated water celery, four leaf clover, parrot's feather and frogbit. I love Lily Blooms because the stock is pretty clean. I used to love Trickers but now not so much.
