How to make floating rock island???
Comments (14)haven't tried Pcan's idea but having tired several others including the use of Great stuff foam, I"d bet the foam via pecan is now the best way to go. Remember you can add an additional layer of foam under the base to increse the bouancy of the island easier with than trying to increase bouancy via great stuff foam - and no mess. Mess - been down that road. I'd try Pecan's idea, but I don't have not room for an additional island - next project is a water wheel...See MoreFloating island question
Comments (16)Thanks for all the helpful tips!!! I am already rethinking this one as it's my prototype!lol!!! I really like the foam idea and making it look more island-ish!!! I was in a pond store and saw how the little fish were eating the roots of the floating lettuce and so wanted a big island of stuff that they could eat from as I only want goldfish and want the pond self sufficient...as in the fih eat from the plants..I don't feed them...I know that I need to feed them at first but next yr they could be on thier own. I am thinking fancy goldfish. Only half a doz. So also have MADE A DECISION!!! This 30ft cement bed will be a 10ft pond, 10ft bog, 10ft veggie garden! It feels good to finally decide!!! Now I can get to work!!! I just want to set it up this year and get it established and next year mosaic it!!!...See MoreFloating Islands
Comments (11)I just made a couple of these today! My pond is small (5 x 7) but I made two floaters out of the furnace filter and Great Stuff. And while right now they sort of look like a page from Cakewrecks.com ("Here is what they wanted, and here is what they got"), I am hoping they will fill in. Even now, the fish are enjoying the shade, and I am enjoying the colors! I put impatiens, coleus, and a couple kinds of mint. I made them based on the link here: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/ponds/msg0418181114221.html...See Morefloating island planters
Comments (17)Hi BT: I am attaching the link again fyi. If you look at Lisa's pics I believe the size is on the wrapper. If I am not mistaken they are 20 X 25 X 1. You will notice in the pics you don't cut the bottom filter at all. You cut holes in the top filter according to the size plants you want to put in them (I cut 12 holes in each of my impatiens islands. 2 islands accommodated 1 flat of flowers). Then you sandwich the 2 furnace filters together using Great Stuff. Just be careful not to use too much Great Stuff or you will fill up the holes you cut. The Great Stuff also works as a float to keep the furnace filters from sinking. You need to use enough for bouyancy, but not too much that you fill up your holes. I rinsed the dirt off of the impatiens roots and placed them bare root in the holes. Once the roots took hold nothing could knock them out. The koi would flip the entire island over. When I flipped it back everything was intact but I had impatiens petals all over the pond. They won't eat the petals. They just like to flip the islands. Maybe they were trying to get to the tadpoles that were living on the islands when I broke the pond down for the winter. Hope this helps. Good luck with you pond.
