Submersible 110 water-proof plug/pump. Help!

Hi All,

I have a fully contained water fountain that has the electrical coming up through the bottom of it. Connected to the electrical is a small pump recirculates the water within the fountain. (The fountain is in the middle of a patio...)

The pump broke and when I went to replace it, I noticed that the plug is unique and submersible. It's much smaller than a regular 110 plug. Does anyone know where I can buy a pump that has a submersible plug at the end rather than the normal 110 plug?

The brand I'm using is a Taam Rio 600. I've written them and they say the don't have a pump wired like this.

I'd rewire it myself but I can't figure out how to get into the pump casing to do this. Both new and old pumps don't look like they allow access. (I've replaced plugs on lamps and vacuum cleaners but this different because it has to be water proof...)

Okay - it's no a 110 volt. After peeling off the algae it turns out the pump is a 12 Volt. But that still doesn't solve the plug problem (I think...).

Thanks Mike. I suspected as much. The manual that came with my pump says its a Sequel 750 series 4250SQL13 but I can't find a picture of it on the MDM site. It looks more like the Sequence 1000 series pumps as is that color. The newer Sequels are bronze colored--mine is black. I bought it in 2006 so I think it was a older model of the new Sequel pumps which have 3 variable speed impellers. It's a 1/8hp motor runs on max 175Watts. According to the pump flow curve at 8ft of head it should be pumping 2500GPH, at 5 ft about 3200. Havn't had a problem with the flow now that I added a midwater drain to my sc and running only this pump on the sc. Would you recommend that I pull the pump now and have the bearings checked or wait until the end of Oct (end of our season). With the pump house covers on I can't hear the pump but will check it regularly. Don't want to burn out the motor! As for arcing breakers--had them installed in my house last fall when doing renovations. It's code here now and the inspector won't pass if not installed for bedrooms. Mine have a yellow sticker on them and a yellow test button like the GFC plug (except that is red). They are expensive--something like $120CD each. The GFC breaker has blue switches compared to the black on the normal breakers. They are also expensive. When I did the reno's on my kitchen, livingroom and bathroom upstairs installed new wiring as the old stuff was only 2 prong. Kitchen plugs near the sink have to have GFC plug and a GFCbreaker on the line. My pond plug has the GFC plug and a breaker but it was mistakenly wired to the same circuit as the furnace which is maybe why the breaker was put in. Thanks for your help. Patti

Hi Mike, OK, Im glad I understood its the red one. Something right! Whoo To Mike, buyorsell888, and calamity_j, The kitties are totally stressed out right now, but I think they'll be OK. The one black cat seen in the pix above, had some teeth pulled, but he seemed almost fine the next day. His brother on the other hand - totally freaked out. The anesthesia didn't wear off, he was scared, and probably in pain all night, so I stayed up with him. Ever since, he's been sleeping in kitchen nightly, which is unusual for him. (The outside boys aren't allowed in any further than the kitchen - long story). The girls indoors - well the one with recurring cancer is acting very needy and wanted to be close *all the time* *every minute of the day*. I cant blame her, shes stressed. Shes had a several surgeries and doesnt like the vet much at all As you can imagine. The other girl had to have some tests, but after a few days, we found they all turned out all right. Shes still feeling a bit crabby with us about having been taken to, The Awful Place. (She holds a grudge, as many of you with kitties will probably know what I mean!) Thanks for asking and well wishing. :) Even though the girls are in their senior years now, theyre like my babies and I stop everything when they are ill. Its so hard that they are getting old! As to the pond, our plan is like something out of a slapstick movie, though we are hoping it might work anyway. Were going to hook up the hose, as Mike suggests, and weve got a tarp weve put a slit in and will place the fountain through, then duct tape, so that any runoff from inside the pipes and fountain gets funneled over the tarp and out to the trees not into the somewhat clean pond water. Its about 105-110 degrees out there today and neither of us are looking forward to working on it!

Pool pump motors can be wired to run on either 110 or 220. IF your pump was wired for 110 and supplied with 110 it was not running at 1/2 speed but was perhaps drawing more amperage than necessary. IF the pool guy changed the power supply to 220 in this case but did not re-wire the back of the motor, the motor would trip on it's own safety controls BUT WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE DAMAGED. Check the back of the motor, where the wires are connected to see if the motor is set for 110 or 220, it is usually a case of moving 2 wires to different connectors. IF your pump was wired for 220 and receiving 110 it would run at 1/2 speed. This is usually really obvious because the motor doesn't sound right and hardly moves any water.

I recommend a 20 amp circuit for the reason the poster above gave, and to provide more overhead for motor loads. A 15 amp circuit should carry the load after the motor has started, and possibly the inrush. The motor may have an inrush current of 4 to 6 times its running current. NEMA rated motors are allowed to have an inrush up to 6 times the maximum loaded running current, however, most motors have inrushes of 5.5 times or less. Its the household circuit breaker that can be a problem. A 15 amp breaker should be able to start this motor without tripping depending on what level its instantaneous trip has been set at. Inrushes of high efficiency motors are greater than the older motors.

It sort of looks like the my broken pump. What doesn't look right are the two prongs sticking out of the side and the plug isn't flat like mine. Plus it the specs doesn't say it's a low voltage 12 volt pump. I'm thinking Rio doesn't make low voltage pumps any longer.

I spent an hour looking on the web and could only find one internet site that carried a different brand of 12 volt pumps, so I ordered it. When it gets here I'll then try to figure out how to connect it up. Hopefully the plug looks the same as the one I have...

Kelym, the pump you ordered hooks up to a 12 volt battery. There is no way to plug it into household wireing. Fooling around with the plug will only invalidate the warranty. If the original pump was plugged into a standard socket it was a different model entirely. AC and DC don't mix. Sandy

Okay - I'm further confused...
So I can't connect a 12 volt battery driven pump to the existing low voltage wiring? There's a transformer at the other end of the electrical in the garage and I WAS running a 12 volt pump (it says it right there on the pump). So there are different kinds of 12 volt pumps? I don't get it..maybe it's time to ask a electrician.

I'm not sure about this, but I think the 12 volt low voltage wiring might be 12 v AC, in which case the pump will not work on the system. Lights don't care if the 12 volts are AC or DC, but a pump needs DC. Put a volt meter on the system and see.

If there is a transformer at the end of the low voltage wiring, look at the information printed on it and see what the out-put is. Look at the info on the old pump and see what type of pump it is, AC or DC.
Most common are transformers that convert from AC to DC.
