What is the green stalk with ridges on my orchid

I just received an orchard and there is a green stalk (center right) growing up from the base of the main stem with the flowers. What is this? Can I use it for propagation? How to do this?

That "green stalk" is the source of the next flowers. Cherish it. Feed it and love it.

When the plant is divided at some point later on, that will be part of a new plant. For now it needs its mommy.

Just noticed some little green growths coming out where the roots are - weeds?

Phalaenopsis is my best guess as well. I'm going to assume that your light down in California is somewhat more intense than it is up here in Toronto. I have no problems with putting phals in South windows so long as they're kept a few feet back and don't get any direct rays of sun for long periods of time, but your experience may differ. I'm a little surprised your spike is browning though. My phals usually keep their spikes for some time after the initial flowering and eventually branch and flower again. If it is a phal, and the flower spike is turning brown, you can cut it off. If there are any green nodes left on the spike you can cut to just above that point and it may branch and flower agian from there. Otherwise, it should grow a new spike again next year. Tyler

Getgoing always gives great help. With the soaking of water. I do mines twice a week. I soak always mine in warm water for at least 15 minutes and then soak again in fertilized water, preferably rain, bottle water or tap if it's good quality. I drain the water out and stick it back in it's spot. I have one growing in partial hydro loving it. I filled the glass half way with volcano stones and clay ones and let the roots reach for it. I don't leave the roots sitting in the rocks in water. I place them under the roots and rest the plant on top.

thats your new psuedobulb, like richardol said, it will be where the sheath/flowers will come from.

as the plant gets more and more pbulbs, you can divided the plant into two plants.

Yeah the small weeds on the bottom appear to be oxallis.
They like the same growing conditions as most orchids in bark so remove them early or they can really dig their roots into the pot.

Other than the minor weed problem, your plant looks healthy.
