Repotting Lilie ?

I am repotting my lilies and I don't have any news paper to line the bottom of the pot with. I was wondering using some liner underlay instead would work? I have koi in my pond and don't want to do something that would harm the koi. I thought I read it somewhere that you could use the underlay but cant remember where.

I just repot mine using as little soil as possible and add enough pea gravel to keep the lily near the top of the basket with a layer of the gravel to weight down the soil.

My baskets have openings all over so that the roots can sip the pond water.

Don't remember the gallon capacity (1 or 2) but they are pretty big so that the Snappers won't flip them.

No more tea bagging my pond.

If you're not growing in water or semi-hydro, you need a soil you can water to beyond the point of saturation (so you're flushing the soil each time you water) without cause to worry that your soil will remain wet (instead of damp or moist) for extended periods and create problems stemming from poor root function or one of the rot diseases that make roots and the lower part of stems their home. Martha, I have 6 hardy water lilies, 1 tropical (which I usually have to replace about every other year...not too successful wintering it over!) and a lotus. I find I have to repot them every year. If I don't then they sometimes split the plastic pots. Even after only one year the pot is usually crammed full. I'd say play it by ear...if after one year the plants don't seem to be too pot bound wait until the next year. I typically use a sandy loam. I made the mistake of mixing in a bit of garden soil one year. NEVER, EVER, again! Let's just say that four koi decided to look for the worms (from the garden soil) they knew had to be in those pots and that the two inches of river rock on the top of each pot didn't even slow them down. You will need an account at a site like photobucket. They are free. Post your picture there and then just look for the area at the bottom of the photo that says HTML and left click on it. You will notice a yellow tag comes up and says copied. You then come back to this or any other post in the forum and right click in this area which will allow you to paste. Water lilies and koi don't go together. No matter how you pot those lilies, the koi will have them pulled back out of the pot. If the koi aren't big now, eventually, they'll go exploring.

Thanks guys for the info..

Scott....Yeah, I know about the koi and lilies not mixing well together. Pea size gravel used to work in keeping the koi from up rooting the plant but as they grow it didn't work anymore. Plan to put larger rocks on the pea size gravel hopefully that will work for a while :o(
