Another fish attack!!Grrr!!!

Grrr!!! Last year I had an otter come and eat all my goldfish, fancies...my babies...then pond fell apart so had to redo, ok. Then restocked with fish...became attached, thought they were safe...well they made it over winter, then 3 days ago...BAM! The Jerk struck again!!! 2.5 fish left. Grrr! So now I will make a cage to go over the pond! I was thinking of fish net but am now gonna go with wire. Will build a wooden frame and then tack the wire mesh over it. I will also consider getting a price on a custom welded cover. Some people say they don't care for unsightly covers, but I am now a believer!! ;-) ha! Because my pond is basically a 10x6ft rectangle, it shouldn't be that hard to do. I may have to reconfigure some rocks to flatten the edges, but I Will do that.

An Otter, really? Sorry about your babies. That's so heart breaking! Where did an Otter come from? Did you see him? Can it be trapped and relocated some place other than my pond? I have had Raccoon problems in past years and it made me sad and anger every time. We have fewer Raccoons now though .:-)

I've had muskrats before but no otters. They are locally endangered and are periodically released by various groups. Hope you get good results but they are smart and sneaky, I hear.

Maybe you should try an electric fence before you spend so much on a cover. They can be unobtrusive.

Well, I finally got around to filling the frames up. Who knows how this will turn out, but...it's a start. :) The native soil had been solarized this summer and was broken up with a digging bar and UCGs and shredded leaves spread over it a few weeks prior to adding the mix. The west bed was filled weekend before last, the east bed last weekend. The mix (per bed) consists of: 4 bags Black Gold "Mushroom Compost" 4 bags Black Gold "Black Kow Compost" 2 bags Robin Hood "Peat Humis" 8 cu ft coarse vermiculite 4 cu ft milled peat moss 20 gallons shredded oak leaves 1/2 cup dolomitic lime spread on native soil before adding mix 1/2 cup dolomitic lime mixed into mix 1 cup Epsoma fertilizer(5-2-2???) mixed into mix Here's a shot of what the mix looks like: An aggravating aspect of this was that some of the ingredients were "too moist" when I bought them at Lowe's and thus resulted in some clumping. I suggest anybody buying ingredients to check for excessive dampness and if found, purchase elsewhere...it would have mixed much more easily if it had been drier. As things dry a bit and the mix is weathered a bit I think the "clods" will break down nicely. Nope, didn't get a soil test done. :o The reasoning behind the dolomitic lime is that 7 years ago a test I had stated the area needed liming. I applied the appropriate amount then, but basically the area has been in grass/sod since about 6 years ago. With the sandy soil historically be acidic in my area I dangerously figured liming would not hurt...especially with the peat in the mix. Below is a link to a series of pictures I took as I mixed the last bed's mix. If you check the photos out look from last to first photo to be in sequence...didn't upload/post in the order I thought it would. :) Basically what the sequence shows is the volume increase of the mix as different ingredients are added. Now...what to plant here in Z8 with temps 80ishF/60ishF, though the next two nights are in the high 30's!!!!...will be camping tomorrow night!!!!. Check this out....predicted low Saturday night is 38F and high Sunday is 81F...a 43-degree spread!!! WOW. But, then back to the 60's and 80's. I use Malathion To repel afids and red spider mites im not sure if it works for spiders, but when ever i spray it for the afids and spider mites they seem to go away for a couple of weeks. But you would want a Orothene because its systematic, rember to allways use a very diluted form of it, it could burn the CP, possibly kill it if its on full formula. And i dont think that the lizard could be hurt by a venus flytrap, (i would worry about it setting off the traps to offten stressing the VFT, the sundew it wouldnt hurt or it wouldnt hurt it as long as it doesnt try eating it could make it sick. And i wouldnt put it in with a Nepenthese in their. (dont know what youre set up is) but I would stick to the Solution of Insecticide, you want about half the directed amount they say to use. Mine breeds Gnats no fruit flys yet.(probably none i live in ohio i havent ever seen a fruit fly to be honest) Cheers

When I married my ex 11 years ago (very small wedding), I asked an old friend to be my MOH. Since she was going through rough financial times I got 2 dresses from my sister who is the same size. This "friend" couldn't even try them on. It got to the point where I wanted help picking out flowers. She always had an excuse & when I asked a few weeks before the wedding if she tried the dresses on, she said no, I decided to give the position to another friend who was helping me with flowers etc. Friend #1 stopped speaking to me for years but finally came around telling me she was so strung up on drugs she couldn't focus on anything else. When I got married almost 3 years ago, she expected to stand in that MOH spot. I decided that I didn't want a repeat (she lives about an hour from me- giving her another excuse) so we went to FL to be married. We invited 1 family member, hubby's grown son as well as his wife. Hubby paid for their plane tickets & was going to pay for their room. They got into a fight about who's car to take to the airport. She won, they took the old car which broke down. After us arranging them to get on the next flight, they fought so much that hubby told them not to come. She was afraid to get on a plane after 911. Hubby ended up fixing their plane tickets so that they could use them for something else, but they never did. It hurt not having his son there especially since he was the only family member invited. Thankfully we had internet friends coming that stood up for us. Good luck with both of your weddings. Thankfully you had enough time to make other arrangements. I don't know what is wrong with people these days, some are so hung up on themselves they just don't care about anyone else. Weddings are stressful enough, you don't need this on top of everything else.

Some types of sawflies are very relentless and breed from spring to frost. So you may have to intervene there if you want your rose to survive. I think some may eat the larvae, but they are very good at hiding, so I don't think it is enough to sit back and wait in some cases. That big fat one looks at least 1-2 weeks old, and has probably eaten several leaflets. And i bet he has like 20 siblings. If you kill this set, another may hatch soon and resume eating. Look for scraped scars on the top of the leaf ste as a clue that a wave is coming soon. The beetle does not look like an ally. Maybe a rose fuller beetle?

Yes, otters are abundant here on Vancouver Island! I am told they have a 40 mile hunting range! There is natural streams, ponds, and of course ocean just down the road so will not be getting rid of them anytime soon...and an electric fence idea scares me cuz my chihuahua would be dumb enough to zap himself! I was thinking of one of those water scarecrows but it may find that fun! ;-) LOL! My only problem is the rocks I used for around the pond are flat but not all the same height.

I don't know if it would work on otters but it stopped my raccoons and has worked for about 3 years now its a cat scat, electronic pest repeller.. I point it down towards the pond pointing on the other side of the pond.

A fido fence(electric fence) will not hurt your dog. It might yelp like I do when I accidently touch it but it will derter any animal intruders. At lest for me it keeps out the many coons and Herons that are tempted. I can't see why it would not work on an Otter unless they are wearing rubber insulated shoes. lol

I will look into it. I was at another person's pond the other day, just in the neighborhood...their goldfish were HUGE! 8" long and so fat, I thought they were koi! I just didn't believe they do get that size...I went on a pond tour last year in Victoria(60 miles down Island) and it was wonderful to see the different ponds! They had people playing harps and other instruments at each pond too! A wonderful day! Once I get this sorted out, I would like to hunt down other ponders in this area and get a tour going!

I don't have any suggestions other than what have been already made.

You have worked so hard to create a pond heaven it is a shame a mere otter (though I do love them in their rightful place) has caused so much pain for you, not just once, but twice. I'm sure sorry you are going through this. It is so sad to lose our finny babies for any reason.

Maybe some of the other people in your area who pond have suggestions.

I think your dog would learn really fast to stay away from the electric wire. I have read they can hear it and associate the sound with pain.

Fortunately for me I have a friend who owns a pond supply store, and know I will get a good product and price for this electric fence. I am gonna bite the bullet and do it!!! Thanks everyone, for comments. I do want to enjoy my pond and fish so what the hey, I only hope it is not any more than a couple of hundred dollars...stay tuned... ;-)
