Aha, the power came back on.

In time for the 6.00 news. Apparently with our over 7" of the heaviest wettest snow I have ever seen we just set a record goiung back as far as records were kept for the snowiest October ever by far. The snow blower thought I had it in the lake, you can't really blow water. Finally got it off the sidewalks and drives. We have had close to 30" of snow in Oct. Insane.

On the good side, we burn wood as a primary heat source and cook with natural gas so were warm and well fed. Unfortunately, a lot of tree damage because of the very heavy snow. Big limbs down all over town along with power lines. One of these years I'm going to buy a generator, keep intending to but put it off. Bet the farm stores sold out of them this P.M.

There sure won't be any harvesting now for several weeks. Son still has almost 100 acres of soybeans to harvest. Hope they didn't shell out during this storm. The corn can wait. Fortunately, got most of the beans in the bin during our 1 week of dry weather.

Good to hear you have power. The generator sounds like a fine idea.

Sorry about the extreme weather, and hope it eases up very soon. I like hearing about the harvesting -- mom's grandpa had a farm here, years ago, and I miss his stories.

Wow! Can't imagine snow in Oct. Course, here in MS, we don't usually even see snow in Dec. I LOVE hearing about your harvesting. My g'mother & g'father farmed. Poor old dirt farming we called it, but it paid the bills and put food on the table. Sure miss it! (Never thought I'd live to say that!)

THANKS, Jodi and Elizabeth! I have the surgery scheduled for Feb 4. They try to get their patients out within 48 hours so they do not pick up infection in the hospital. To get out, I will need to be able to walk across the room with a walker or crutches and go up 2 steps. Having been through cartilege removal surgeries a couple of times, I have heard that the total replacement is not much worse. They will call me on Friday to tell me what time to show up in the morning. My girlfriend and I are going to a big Garden show In Tacoma the day before, then out to lunch for a blow out, LOL. After that they may as well put me to sleep and get it over with! I will be confined to home for the next month of so, as long as I need any help with housekeeping, or my own care. If I leave home for other then Dr my help will be cut off, so I will count on you guys to keep me entertained. The surgeon is extremely good, and I have talked to a number of people who have done really well under him and see it as a very positive experience. We are starting with the left knee, and will leave the more complicated right knee until fall so I can get my gardening in. Dr says I should be back in the garden by early MArch, so that is a goal I can work toward. This is a new improved form of the surgery where they do not cut through the quad muscle but go in from the side under it, so it heals much faster and without as much pain. I am really looking forward to being able to work without pain in my garden and business...it has been 28 years since this started with tearing the cartilege in my right knee. Tore the left one 7 years ago just walking across flat ground! So I hope to be home to my laptop computer and recliner and have some time between pain med sleepiness, and therapy, by Wed or Thurdays after the surgery. And yes, I am excited about the possibilites of being able to work without pain before long! A goal worth working toward!

Doing fine so far, and thanks for the thoughts. Randy, the people who died this morning had their generator outside, but the CM fumes got into the house thru cracks and crevices in doors and windows. So, it needs to be outside, but some distance from the house itself, too. Still too big of a chicken to get one. I left my faucets dripping, my cats are fine with plenty of food and water. My neighbor keeps an eye on the house for me. We check every so often to see if the power has come back on. Lots of people are having problems, though, with the power coming back on for a bit and then losing it again. Makes me a bit nervous to go back over there and then have it go again and have to come back. So would just as soon stay here until it's been on for a day or so. I was actually hoping a tree would fall on my house and I could get a new roof because I need it! LOL! It's an old house, built in 1947, but I love it. The news has been showing pictures of the damage in Crown Heights district in OKC, and that's where we are close to. In fact, Jess and I drove down that very street the other day when we saw the trees down across the road and one completely uprooted. I've seen many trees split and broken, but never one actually uprooted. Susan

I have owned three Canon digital cameras in the past 10 years and have always enjoyed trouble-free photography. Nowadays, it comes down to getting the feature set that is right for you. All the major manufacturers make great gear, it's just a matter of finding which one matches your needs in the price range you have in mind. I agree that reviews are good, but it's just one persons opinion. However, if 19 out of 20 people have a common complaint, then that's something to consider. Regarding battery life, there are a few things you can do to extend the life. In most cases, common sense applies. If you use the flash a lot or leave the LCD viewer on much of the time, your batteries take a hit. A USB connection between your computer and camera may also draw energy from your battery, so consider getting a card reader. If you get a backup battery, spend a little more and get the factory version instead of a cheaper, third-party choice. I tried that a few years ago and spent $20 to get one that was DOA. The seller also refused to refund my money. From then on, I always bought the same battery that Canon sold with the camera. Good luck with your new camera!

With the breaker off, I'd remove the receptacle near where hubby hit his head and check to see if the wires are pushed into the back of the receptacle (backstabbed). If they are, remove them and put them on the side screws. If not pushed into the back, see that the screws are tight. Reinstall, then turn on the breaker and see if things work. If this doesn't fix the problem move one receptacle closer to the panel and try again. If you do manage to get the problem fixed and do have the "backstabbed" wiring, It would be a good idea to move all the wiring on your receptacles to the side screws.

It's raining cats and dogs this morning here in KY. No snow yet, thanks goodness. A couple of miles down the road a harvester is stuck in a soybean field. It was still too wet from last weeks flood, had been under water.
Hope the weather gets better and your son can still bring the rest of the beans in.

This year really has been crazy. Let wet snow melt if possible, it's dangerous to your health, wait for powder to play with.

You and your wife are on my mind when I listen to those weather reports. Being on a forum like this really expands one's horizons and makes even national weather pertinent.

I remember hunting in the snow on Thanksgiving day back in Missouri......but one expects that in late November. And in many years past we always had a snow at least once before my birthday, and that is in early November. But the weather isn't like it used to be. Not necessarily milder lately, just different. We have had three cool summers in succession. Last year tomatoes didn't even show up at Farmer's market until almost the season's end. This year, I smartened up and planted a variety what sets fruit in the forty degree range, picked them green and let them ripen inside for a month. Cold, cold evenings all summer. Not enough rain to deep soak anything and my spring is still suffering. Cold soggy springs and falls.

Living here as long as I have, I've prepared for years for stretches of no power. We get along too, with our pitcher pump, the gas grates, oil lamps and the stocked pantry. It's just part of life, and we don't be too uncomfortable, but quilting or reading by coal oil lamps stinks. LOL. I have been toying with having a set of gas lights installed in at least the kitchen and thought my husband would guffaw at the idea, but surprisingly he didn't.

We have generators, but they only get fired up for the g'house crops when absolutely necessary. I think once we dragged one down to the house to let the freezer get cold after three days of no power so we wouldn't lose food. I hate to hear that constant roar and it's just not worth it to me to live like that.

Hope you get some moderation to the weather. Not this bad, this early. Keep an eye on El Nino this year. If it builds we are in for a mild winter, but if it's a weak one the nasties will drop to your area for the duration of winter and spill over eastward.

George, I can relate, we had a horrible October 13th storm a few years back, dumped at least 3' of heavy wet snow, the tree damage was unbelievable the area is still in the process of re-treeing. We've been lucky so far with just a few minor frosts. Living in this area (Buffalo,NY) we get crazy stuff, can remember another snow storm with about three feet on May 7 about 20 years ago.

Aha, the power came back on.
