"Should I keep fertizing now that the blooms are in decline?" Yes, it is even more important during periods of growth. I feed a low even number product (20-20-20 or less) at half strength (or less) all year round for most of my plants.

I am not sure about the health of your new growth. I don't like to see any brown on new Dendrobium growth at that stage.

@richard, what "brown" are you referring to? I hope it's the dirty bamboo stick that's sitting the 12:15 (clock) position. :-)

I just looked at the plant again (you scared me) and noticed that the roots on the new growth were a bit brown (not visible from the photo), which could be due to over watering though I do let the medium dry out completely between watering.

Cooktown orchid is a common name which may not be familiar to some readers at garden web. A similar thing happens here with pink rock orchid or yellow rock lilly which are other types of Dendrobium.

Dendrobium bigibbum flowers in late Autumn here and then is subject to a warm high light drought during winter before it starts to grow in spring when watering and fertilizer are increased through spring and summer and then tapered off in Autumn.

This culture reflects the climate in NE Australia where winters are warm and drier and summers are warm and much wetter.

You need some advice from the locals re the culture of this orchid.

I water and feed my bigibbum and bigibbum hybrids while they are blooming (right now) and growing. When both stop I cut back on the water and don't fertilize until I see new growth activity.

Chris, yours looks like mine (Sirat x Chao Phaya Gem) "Hawaii" which is also blooming. Mine is the 'big sister' this one is about 3 ft. She blooms twice a year for me.

Mine's a mini I've had for 4 years, just measured and from bottom of pot to top of tallest leaf is 11.5" !!

You certainly get more 'bang for your buck'. I'd rather the smaller plant. My den is always doing something, blooming, making a growth and spiking. It doesn't take a break. It sits on the floor in my living room all winter because of its size. I need to look at the mini's.
