Goldenrod variety?

unprofessional

My grandmother's had this plant come up next to her house ever since she bought it, nearly 45 years ago. I think it's quite striking, but she doesn't know what it is. She remembers that it used to be next to the doors of a lot of old farmhouses. It gets absolutely no care, only gets a little filtered sunlight in the latter half of the day, and grows basically on concrete (perfect plant, right?). It always ends up at about 6' tall with yellow flowers. It does tend to be a little flimsy if it doesn't have anything to lean on. Her friend thinks it's some sort of goldenrod, but my grandmother insists that she knows it's not.

Location is south central Michigan, zone 5. Here are some pictures that I hope can help identify it.

Leaf shape, with my chubby hand for scale:

The clump of plants:

I pulled up one of the stalks. Don't know if a root shot can help, but hell, can't hurt:

Thanks for any help!
