It's looks like my step daughter and S-I-L may be off to Australia.

They're weighing the job he's been offered.

He's involved in theater design and has been globetrotting the past few years, mainly to London, where the company he works for was honored by Queen Elizabeth and the PM. OK...

I'm not sure they want to leave NYC and there was a question of what she would do. She's an accountant and manages several departments for a company in Connecticut. As it turns out, the company has now offered her a job too if they accept the offer.

I guess, if it were me, and it isn't, that I'd have left already. :)

Oh well.

So? What is it really like to live in Australia?

Michael, my sister lives in Melbourne - I've also got some aunts and uncles and cousins there. They love it. My Aunts and families moved there when the kids were very young so the cousins just grew up there. My sister moved there about 8-9 years ago and is now a citizen, she just loves Melbourne. It's got a good night life and lots of things to do according to her. We visited a few years ago and liked it. Where in Australia will they be going to? Sydney is supposed to be really nice too - we visited Adelaide and I liked it better there. Lots of vineyards (DH's cousin had her wedding at a vineyard there that we attended), beautiful architecture etc. It's a nice country with really friendly people. They might like it there.

G'Day Fusion! I didn't think any Americans would remember that now-famous phrase from our legend Paul Hogan (Hoges). You are more than just a pretty face, Fusion! I've never done crossing before but this season I am going to have a go. First in line will be OSU Blue which I will cross with a number of other top-tasting varieties to try and blend its color with the superb flavor of others. Got nothing to lose, eh! As well as that I'm growing out a number of plants of a cross between Stupice and Cherokee Purple. The cross was done by Paul in MD who 'gave up' a couple of years ago as he didn't come up with anything worthy of further pursuit. He made the cross in an attempt to inject the superb flavor of Cherokee Purple into a new variety with the earliness of Stupice. This season Down Under I am growing out RL and PL plants as F3s. It's all part of the fun! Life's too short not to grow out potentially interesting crosses! LOL

The idea is not to dry the shrimp completely. The idea is to dry the outside just enough that when you pan fry the shrimps the juice gets sealed in and the shrimp remain tender yet the outside is caramelized. Try it. It works. Regarding "fresh" shrimps: All shrimps you normally buy are frozen and refrozen. However, if in your town you have a large China Town, you may be able to buy life swimming, jumping shrimps, and also order life shrimps in Chinese restaurants there. This is another favourite recipe. Home Cookin Chapter: Recipes From Thibeault's Table Shrimps - Skewered Shrimp With Lemon Pesto ========================================== Weber Grill REcipes 32 large shrimp (450 to 565 grams or 1-1 1/4 pounds) shelled and deveined (except for tails) Lemon Pesto 1/2 cup firmly packed fresh basil 1/4 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 clove garlic 1 tablespoon pine nuts . In a food processor or blender, combine ingredients for Lemon Pesto. Whirl until smooth. Rinse shrimp and pat dry. Place in a large heavy-duty plastic bag or nonreactive bowl. Pour in pesto and seal bag (or cover bowl). Rotate bag to distribute marinade and place in a shallow pan. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours, turning shrimp occasionally. Remove shrimp from bag and drain, discarding marinade. Thread shrimp on skewers. Arrange skewers on cooking grate. If using charcoal, cook directly over coals; if using gas, use medium heat and put skewers over unlit side of grill (indirect heat method). Place lid on grill. Cook, turning once halfway through cooking time, until shrimp are opaque in thickest part (4 to 5 minutes; cut to test). Transfer to platter or individual plates. Garnish with basil sprigs.

Shellfish allergies are no joke. This is the one allergen that is " Adult onset". I grew up on the ocean; and have eaten lots of shrimp. In 2005 I had my first reaction to shellfish. After 2 bites, my throat started to close up. Last night 2018 was my last exposure; and it was more severe. It was cross contamination. I had a steak where a lot of shrimp was on the menu. My steak was cooked where shrimp was cooked. I was in the ER within an hour of exposure via 911 ambulance. Vomiting, sweating out of every pore and blacked out twice. Once hitting a wall so hard everything fell off and broke on the opposite side. The EMTs kept asking me if I have been drinking.... None of my family told them I just ate at a local restaurant and had a severe shellfish allergy. I could not communicate this as I was in and out of consciousness. I am now going to an allergist, getting a medical alert bracelet and an epipen. I guess my family was too freaked to communicate what was going on.

...........and I missed you too. Hope you received my e-mail. Also have friends living in Perth and Sidney who love it too. We always planned on going to visit, but I cannot see it happening, yet!

Anyway, still a difficult situation with your step daughter and SIL - her career seems at it's height - so hard for her!

.........and if they do take this on, then you will get your chance to visit, hee,hee! I know, the thought of the flight may be nerve racking, but you will do it. :)

From my brief visit, Sydney reminded me of Boston or Philly (not quite NYC). Lots of financial institutions (and a Krispy Kreme!). Being from a big city, I liked it a lot. Lots to do, restaurants, clubs, beaches, hiking, biking.

I didn't get to see much of Melbourne city proper, but the city was also on the large side, lots of activity. The "suburbs" were really nice. My friends live in one about a 40 minute train ride from Melbourne, overlooking a bay and near a beach. The wineries in Victoria are plentiful, and I liked the chocolatier and the Red Hill Cheese Shop (cafe and shop). Lots of nice sightseeing, especially if they like hiking and biking (EVERYONE was on a bike, it seems, riding past my friends' house).

What my friends aren't so use to are the expense and not having the local big grocery store 1 mile away (they have some small shops within walking distance, but no bodegas on the corner). The people were really nice. We couldn't find horseradish for cocktail sauce (their version of "cocktail sauce" has mayonnaise). But you can find all kinds of coffee!

Prawns on the barbie... ;-))
