Suction Dredge

Do any of you have experience using some type of trash pump to dredge out the bottom of a pond? I have to remove about 20 cu/yds of sand (no rocks) from the bottom of a fish pond that has filled in over the years. Heavy equipment would be a problem with the fences and hedges surrounding the pond. I was thinking of buying a cheap 2" or 3" gas pump and using that to suction up a slurry of sand over several weekends but I don't know if a pump of this type would be up to the task. This would be a single use job but I'd hate to ruin a pump on the first spoonful of sand. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
