Woodland plant ID

My DH found this plant growing in an area here in NE MS that is covered with red cedar trees and very few other plants. The ground is clay with a lime base not too far below.

The plant grows from a tuber that is appx a foot deep and needless to say hard to dig up in this soil. The tubers appear to be running under ground from a main root sourse that T's off in all directions. Then the tuber appears to grow straight up and puts out anywhere from 4 to 8 leaves. These leaves are as big as 14" tall and 8" wide. They have a serrated edge and tend to roll inward on the back side of the leaf.

I've got pictures that I hope will clear up my rambling explanation.

Thanks for all help and blessings to all, Mona
